Dull movie 'uplifted' by Susan Hayward in a bathrobe

Basically a ponderously episodic bore. The movie is rescued by having
two of Hollywood's sexiest (but mediocre) actresses in one movie.
Hildegard Knef isn't bad either. The African scenery helps alleviate
some of the monotony. I particularly enjoyed the hippos on the river.
Peck is his usual boring self and spends most of the movie motionless. This matches his acting. His character Harry Street is a self absorbed mean
spirited drama queen treating beautiful women badly. I didn't like the book either.

Agree with you 100%. It was a chore to sit through this long-winded bore. Peck is indeed a stiff actor, but the script didn't help either. High point of the film: the gorgeous score by Bernard Herrmann, way better than the film itself.

Hayward's modestly sized but perfectly shaped and perky assets didn't really need any uplift.

She did look good. Better than Ava, which is saying something. But he bathrobe was less revealing than her safari garb.
