Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly

It just struck me how much older Cooper is than Kelly and Im kinda pissed about it. As if a hottie like Grace Kelly wouldnt be repulsed by a man that is well old enough to be her father. Kelly is 23 in this movie to Cooper's 51. I can't watch this the same anymore.

Grace Kelly made a career out of being paired with actors who could have been her father.

Look at Rear Window, she could have been Jimmy Stewart's carer.

I just shake my head at anyone seriously "turning away in disgust" as Coop and Grace Kelly kiss in this film. Are you that obtuse that you can't see Gary Cooper was unbelievably handsome?

Have you ever seen anyone in your life this good looking?

Repulsed by Gary Cooper? Are you insane?...

reply

Yeah, I don't see how anybody couldn't find Gary Cooper to be handsome. He was truly the ultimate "man's man"! :)

'Dressed up like a million-dollar trooper, trying hard to look like Gary Cooper.' There's a reason why he's so highly regarded by so many. 

All the women I know would not be repulsed by him at all. Some men have it others don't. Young and older woman will always be attracted to handsome masculine male stars. The men who age well do not get less attractive as they get older. I have seen some very handsome older gentlemen.

reply

Well, Cooper is still tall and slender and handsome. And Grace liked older men. Certainly, Cooper was more attractive than the short, bald, chunky Bing Crosby, who was all of 2 years younger than Gary and whom Kelly screwed.

reply

Gary Cooper was indeed one of the handsomest actors in Hollywood!

Yet the age gap between Cooper and Kelly was just a bit too big.
I explained it to myself by reasoning that Amy probably didnt have such a great choice of men anyway (look at the townsfolk), and personality + looks combined, she made absolutely the best choice!

Lol though @ at all the grampas in the thread assuring strangers on the internet of their good looks and their 'hot gfs'.

I have the impression that marriages of wide differences in ages were more common in the 1800s than they are today. But the question is- did it bother you? Did it affect your enjoyment of the film, to any extent?

A colleague of mine said that Gregory Peck was considered for the role. Peck, like Cooper, is tall, slender and very handsome, and is 15 years younger than Cooper. I think Greg would also have done a fine job in the film, but not better than Gary.

It did not bother me. I thought they looked good together and Cooper was very credible in the role.

reply

No, It did not bother me during the film at all!

I did have to think of this little scenario i mentioned ( how they would come together despite their age differnce) at the wedding ceremony though!
But films should encourage your imagination, shouldn't they?
And they probably shouldnt explain everything.

Agreed, I think Gregory peck would have been also a good lead.
John Wayne, not so much.

reply

The age difference does look startling.

It's that man again!!
