Why do people rave about this film ???

Please can someone describe to me how they can like this film, because i struggle to see why. It was shoddy and average at best.

It has been confirmed: The original poster is an idiot. Absolute and total.

Thanks to everyone for the replies, I can accept it as a good film but I just don't understand its revered status amongst the greats.

As for NBA_Tv42, bless you for being a troll on an otherwise nice thread. Kind regards.

As a noir fan, not sure how I've missed this movie all these years, but finally was able to catch it during TCM's recent Nicholas Ray retrospective and I agree with those who think it was brilliant. Bernard Herrmann's score captures the viewer immediately during the opening credits and this film simply never lets up over its duration.

For those saying it's like watching two different movies, I didn't get that impression at all as even though the locations are in stark contrast, the action actually ramps up as Ryan reaches the country making the transition from the hard-boiled city scenes to the supposedly sleepy rural area, pretty seemless. Ryan never fails to deliver as a character with an edge although in this case, it's refreshing to see him find redemption with the Lupino character at the conclusion of the film. Well done all around from the direction, acting, music to the cinematograpy. Had one quibble towards the end where Ryan and Lupino are walking back towards Willows house (I believe)when the backdrop behind them appears very fake. Odd to me as the exterior country shots until that moment were so beautifully shot and then all of sudden, we get what appears to be a rolling background. Oh well, this a near perfect noirish thriller/romance. Loved this movie!

I´ve never heard anyone "rave" about it or placing it "amongst the greats".

Well, I agree with you -- 7.5 is a dubious rating. I'd only go 5.5 to 6. Ryan is good; Lupino's acting is pretty ridiculous. The early scenes, the set-up, isn't bad -- some nice realism -- but overall the script is weak and the Ward Bond character and the boy being chased (Lupino's brother) are poorly defined and acted. Just OK...

The early scenes are brilliant and moody, and captures the sleazy world of low level crime really like no other. Remember this was made in 1951, and it still remains steamy in those bar scenes and in the gangsters girlfriends apartment. The ouezing sexuality of the teenage prostitute in the bar was extremely daring for its day, the bookie was also brilliantly captured. I grew up in areas with bars and people like this. Unfortunally most peoples frame of reference today is other movies.

Why are you offended? It took you over three years to return to a thread that you initiated. And in that post, it sounded like you wanted people to persuade you to change your opinion, which is absurd.

reply

Interesting and excellent storyline, terrific acting, romantic, not too much action...

I feel that way about some films. I recently saw Citizen Kane and The Bicycle Thief. I can see that they are really good movies, but they just didn't appeal to me very much. I guess it's like music. It either "speaks" to you or it doesn't.

I guess this one didn't "speak" to you.

Didn't it have enough special effects for you?

Don't know what to say. You are missing a lot. Brilliantly shot with strikingly unique music, it is anything but shoddy or average. It is about people who have reached their emotional and psychological limits. Maybe you've never been at your wit's end.
