Question about The Raffle for the Ladies Overseas Aid

I caught the end of this episode tonight, and I've wondered why, after being told by the District Attorney that she and Ethel would be charged with Fraud if the drawing was held, Lucy didn't just call Mr. Feldman's store, ask to speak to Ethel and tell her to wait until Lucy got there before the drawing was held.

Of course, I realize that if she had, the episode wouldn't have been nearly as suspenseful/amusing.

That’s a good question! All I can think of is Lucy was so nervous about going to jail, she did not even think of it. And neither did the D.A. for that matter.

My question about that episode happens at the end. Ethel remembers that the brownstone is in her name, so she mortgaged it to get the money for their trip.

Fred almost faints dead away.

But I don’t understand how Ethel could mortgage the building alone. Surely she and Fred were co-owners. Wouldn’t the bank need his signature too? In another episode Ethel tells Lucy that Fred does not even tell her where he hides the rent money before he takes it to the bank. Of course Ethel knew his secret hiding place anyway😀

Good Point PJ!

I imagine there was some cost/tax saving measure in having the apartment building in Ethel's name, but, though Fred often bungled money matters, given how tight fisted he was with money,I find it hard to believe that Fred would give Ethel that much control over the building.
