Unanswered Question about a Scene...

Lucy playing matchmaker with Eddie Grant is one of my favorite episodes. But there's one scene that always makes me think that the writers overlooked something.

I agree with gb that we don't see everything that the characters do. So we can't always claim that there are inconsistencies.

But in the Eddie Grant timeline, Lucy finds out at the last minute that they would be entertaining a bachelor. She immediately sets out to fix him up with Sylvia Collins. We see their entire conversation. Ricky is angry with her and tells her that she "made us look ridiculous." So it's unlikely that Lucy ever got on the phone that night to trade notes with Ethel.

The next morning Ethel says that she went to work on him right away but Fred kept kicking her under the table!

Lucy calls Sylvia to set up a date and she tells her that Eddie is staying at the Sherry Plaza. HOW did Lucy know where he was staying?

With her matchmaking on overdrive, I think it's highly unlikely that Ricky told her where Eddie was staying.

A tiny bit of dialogue would have helped the scene make sense. Lucy could have covered the phone with her hand while she was setting up the date with Sylvia and asked, "Ethel, where is Eddie staying?"

I just don't see how Lucy could have known the name of Eddie's hotel otherwise...unless she waited until Ricky was asleep and called Ethel.

Since you rarely post threads, PJ, I didn't even notice this until tonight.

You have brought this up before, but I don't think it's such a big deal. Surely, Lucy could've found this out in
numerous ways:

Lucy and Ethel talk after Eddie leaves the Mertz apartment.
Lucy overhears Ricky mention it.

To me, it's such a small thing. In fact, I wouldn't have even noticed it had you'd not brought it up back when you did.

That said, I agree that having Lucy cover the phone, then ask, "Ethel, where's Eddie staying at?" would've been tighter.

It's possible that a line like this was in the first or second draft, then cut out to fit that 25-minute run time.

Yes, it's just one of those little things I wonder about! I just don't think Ricky would have mentioned it for Lucy to hear. Who would he have said it to? Fred? On the phone? He knew how Lucy was a big eavesdropper. lol

Just one of those questions for me.

Its because when you watch on cable TV nowadays, they edit out a few scenes to allow for more commercial time. Nearly every old show they do that to

PJ and I were discussing the UNCUT DVDs.

One thing that never made sense to me, is Ethel coming home with her coat, entering the Ricardo apartment with
"Hi", then when Lucy starts to act out that Ricky is giving her a mink stole, Ethel starts to leave, stating, "I don't
have time for games, I gotta go get my dinner started." Well, then WHY did she enter the Ricardo apartment in the
first place??? If she needs to make dinner, why would even bother dropping by, unless she needed to borrow something.
Odd to me.

That just doesn't make sense to me either.

If Ethel had come in and said, "Lucy, here's the "whatever" you asked me to pick up when I was shopping."

Or if she stopped for some other reason it would make sense. But the writers just needed Ethel to be in the room so Lucy could act out her mink coat scenario.

So what are you saying? That there's a directors cut out there? You aren't making any sense.
