Broderick Crawford, awful once again

The Black Cat, All the Kings Men, this.
The same loud, stupid, belligerent stereotype, over and over.

Crawford's performance needs close study.
By letting the bluster distract you, you miss those wonderful slow burn looks at Holliday, his excellent double takes with his accolytes and the many bits of business during his entrances and exits.
Watch his anger dissolve into dismay as he realizes he can't browbeat the girl any more, and surely his perfect take on passing Holliday in the hallway, greeting her, failing to recognize her because of the glasses she has donned and the expertly timed reaction.

A very underrated actor

Maybe a one note actor, but at least it's in tune!

Well said.

Crawford was great in King's Men, and Born Yesterday.

And they are very different roles.

I just saw both of these films recently, and while I liked them, I couldn't help but notice that Broderick Crawford' almost relentless blustering portrayal of characters. Is he like this in all of his films????

I guess you should watch a few more and decide.

Broderick created the role of 'lenny' on broadway in 'of mice and men'.

Read some of the stories surrounding 'not as a stranger'

Watch him host SNL with the original cast.

Read the stories about the adventures of the hellraising team of lon chaney jr. and his pal Broderick.

Crawford's dumbfounded reactions to the "fancy talk" going on around him were absolutely priceless. And he also successfully suggested the sort of a pathetic side of his bellowing, overbearing persona.

You're in an minority here clearly. And BORN YESTERDAY is certainly not the same as ALL THE KING'S MEN with Crawford effortlessly playing broad comedy with a touch of vulnerability.
