Why did the Nortons have a higher live style than the Kramdens

I notice that in the few episodes that take place in the Nortons' apartment they seem to have many more material things than the Kramdens, i.e. television, more furniture, curtains, rugs, pictures. Did Ed make a lot more than Ralph or was Ralph especially thrifty and tight with his money or Ed more spendthrift and lavish.

reply

No, the Nortons did not make more money than the Kramdens, they just bought everything on time. Ralph and Alice were more penny-pincers.

reply

Ralph was the penny pincher, Alice wanted more things like the Nortons

reply

Alice, who controlled the purse strings, did not go along with Ralph's hairband schemes. Come to think of it, Ralph wasn't exactly a penny-pincer. The time he thought he was a millionaire he basically spent it all in one day. Alice was the more sensible one, but she definitely deserved at least at TV and a phone.

reply

You would think Alice would have sprung for an electric icebox.

reply

Not to mention a can of cleanser and a sponge.

reply

Perhaps the enormous disparity in the two household food bills would have something to do with that. We all know how Ralph loved to eat, and eat, and eat.

reply

Yes...but there's also references that Norton "eats and eats and eats" as well. He just never gains a pound.

I always thought it was because of Ed buying furniture on credit, along with Ralph throwing away money on crazy, hair-brained schemes that was the difference.

reply

Norton helps his finances by raiding Ralph's icebox, or just showing up at dinnertime.

reply

Watch the later Honeymooners, Jackie lost weight and Art looked larger than him. I guess the metabolism slowed down.

Norton did buy everything on credit, until he had so many accounts going he got denied. Ralph just blew the money that's why Alice controlled the purse strings.

I guess the metabolism slowed down.

Probably the three corned beef sandwiches he ate on his way to lunch began to take its toll as well...

reply

Everyone knows a sewer worker makes more money than a bus driver

reply

I was just watching the episode where Ralph wants to go on TV to sell a kitchen gadget and came here to ask the same question.

reply

Ralph probably lost more through his schemes than Norton even though the series never touched on it much. Ralph probably played the numbers more than he ever let on to Alice about it.
