Cute movie ... more than a bit dated

But it is fun to see the SF Bay Area in 1949. When the protagonist
of the movie makes his way to Larkspur, Idaho, we know it is really
Larkspur, CA, just a little north of San Francisco.

It is interesting to look on the map for the landmarks ... the gas
station, the main drag of the town, the fire station, etc.

It's interesting to note how the plots of movies were so much more
simple in the past. The plots of criminals too I suppose. Also the
minds of the audiences seem to be a lot more accepting or forgiving.

Still, I liked the movie. Got to watch it for free on You-Tube where
there are a lot of very old movies in their entirety.

It's kind of sad to know that this 1949 movie was almost 70 years
ago and all the actors and people in the movie only reside in the
past and on screen.

Dated? It's a 1949 movie about 1949. The people look and talk like 1949. What did you expect?

As for the plot, it's as complex as most twenty-first-century movies, and more than some.

Hilarious that anyone would criticize a movie for being "dated" when it was relevant at its time. It shows an ability to look any further than the tip of your own nose. Too many people now have no understanding of history. It's like they can't enjoy a movie unless it was made in the last 5 years.

reply

Yes, all gone. I noticed that both of the leads died at relatively young ages of laryngeal cancer. They were probably both smokers. I noticed that Walter/Bill lit up a few times in the movie.

reply

Oooh. Smokers bad. Hiss. Hiss.

It's a moral issue!

reply

Closer to an oral issue — cancer that is.

reply

Meh, it's less deadly than ice cream actually. More people die from heart disease related to cholesterol in food.

Just silly to watch an old movie and think smoking is the big issue here.

reply

Didn't”t say it was “the” or “a” big issue; thought it was an interesting, if sad, side note. It was only one of a number of comments I made on the film. The others concerned plot points and such.

Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em, Onan — with your free hand, of course.

reply

Okay. But what am I doing with my other hand? 🤣

The things that really dated it for me were Walter/Bill’s belly-button high waistband, super wide and super short tie, bracers, and short-trimmed mustache. Also the conventions of opening and closing the movie with a dictionary definition and the flashback scene where Walter remembers the many things that people have said to him while we see his face in close-up.
