Where Would You Rank Red River Among Hawks' Best Films?

Howard Hawks is one of my favorite directors, probably my number one favorite. I have this excellent film in my top five favorites of Hawks:

1. Only Angels Have Wings
2. His Girl Friday
3. Scarface
4. Red River
5. Bringing Up Baby

Of course, Howard made a ton of other brilliant films. Where would you rank Red River among the best of Howard Hawks?

"Dry your eyes baby, it's out of character."

Best films? What a joke. I'm watching Red River late at night and laughing at how bad it is. Don't you think a director should know something about the subject matter he's making a movie about? There are so many unbelieveable things about this movie, it is absolutely laughable. Unimaginable how anyone can think it's good. What a waste of time.

A director should have a sense of style first and foremost. If knowing the subject matter intimately were the most important thing, then all cowboys should have been directing the westerns instead of the guys in Hollywood on the studio contracts. I guess "Red River" can't hold a candle to the "Shawchump Redumbtion" or whatever that non-entity is called.

Maybe at least employ a real cowboy as a consultant. Great writers spend years researching a subject in order to understand what they are writing and be truthful and honest to the story. Why is this different for movies and why is it acceptable? When ridiculous elements are entered into a movie, it takes away all authenticity. You lied to me about one element, why should I believe you about anything? Perhaps we should just redefine the genre as science fiction. We end up randomly hurding the audience around like sheep. Just put a ring in my nose . . .

The only truly great western may be Unforgiven.

You make some valid points, but I don't think Eastwood is much of a stylist and "The Unforgiven" got a lot of good notices just for being p.c. If Eastwood really wants to be a director that will be remembered, he should stop reading reviews.

Definitely at No. 1

1. Red River
2. His Girl Friday
3. The Big Sleep
4. Brining Up Baby
5. Twentieth Century
6. Rio Bravo
7. Scarface
8. Only Angels Have Wings
9. Sergeant York
10. El Dorado

Have never really been a fan of To Have & Have Not.

Let's see if you bastards can do 90.
