This movie has some of the best dialogue I've ever heard. There were several times I stopped and rewound a scene to hear it again.

*A few plot spoilers here!*

Ballin: "You haven't much faith in the stability of women. One wonders what woman brought Johnny to this pretty pass."
Gilda: "One does. Let's hate her, shall we, Ballin?
Ballin: "Let's. Shall we, Johnny?"
Johnny: "Let's. That I'll drink to."

Delgado: "I would like permission to dance with your lady."
Johnny: "The answer is no."
Gilda: "The answer is yes. I'd love it."
Delgado: "But the young man..."
Gilda: "He'd love to, but can't afford it."

Johnny: "Your husband is showing."

Gilda: "You're out of practise, aren't you? Dancing, I mean. I could help you get in practise again. Dancing, I mean."

Johnny: "There are more women in the world than anything else. Except insects."

Gilda: "This is Gabe Evans. Isn't he cute?"
Johnny: "Just darling. Get him out of here."

Det. Obregon: "The atmosphere in here has always interested me. Now it fascinates me."

Gilda: "If I'd been a ranch, they would've named me The Bar Nothing."

Johnny: "Go anywhere, with anyone, but I'll take you there and bring you home. Exactly the way I take and pick up the laundry."
Gilda: "Shame on you. Any psychiatrist would say your thought associations are revealing."

Gilda: "Would it interest you to know how much I hate you, Johnny? I hate you so much that I'd destroy myself to take you down with me."

Johnny: "Her husband's death hit her hard. She asked me to represent her.
Associates: "We need be in no hurry to leave. She may recover."
Johnny: "Not a chance in the world. She's marrying me this afternoon."

"Didn't Langford tell you? There's no such thing as an annulment in Argentina!" The look on Gilda's face is priceless.

Gilda: There's two things about Latin Men. For one thing they know how to dance. For another (pause) What's your phone number?

Indeed.this movie has some of the bst one-liners I've heard in a long while - save for Casablanca. I do love it when Gilda says if she were a ranch she'd be called the Bar Nothing.

I hate you so much that I'd destroy myself to take you down with me.

reminds me of Wuthering Heights every time i hear that line.
for those of you who havent read it, the main female character says something along those lines "ill break my own heart to destory them" cant remember it exactly.
and the way johnny marries Gilda to "punish" her is one of the themes in the novel as well.

"Hate is an exciting emotion...haven't you noticed? Very exciting. I hate you too, Johnny. I hate you so much, I think I'm going to die from it...darling...I think I'm going to die from it."

"I promise you, before I die I'll surely come to your doorstep"

reply

Gilda says something like: "I think it's good business, surrounding yourself with ugly women and beautiful men."

reply

Gilda: I want all the hired help to approve of me. Glad to have met you, Mr. Farrell.
Ballin: His name is Johnny, Gilda.
Gilda: Oh, I'm sorry, Johnny's such a hard name to remember...and so easy to forget. JOHNNY. There. See you later, Mr. Farrell.

Rita Hayworth's crudely sarcastic way of delivering lines is what makes it so great.

I'd say my favorite is this

Johnny: What did you say to him?
Gilda: I just told him if a man answers, hang up. Wasn't that all right?
Johnny: You can't talk to men down here the way you would at home, they don't understand it!
Gilda: Understand what?
Johnny: They think you mean it!
Gilda: Mean what?
Johnny: Doesn't it bother you at all that your married?
Gilda: What I want to know is, does it bother you?

I love how she walks away so satisfied with herself!

reply

Gilda: Put the blame on Mame.

Nobody's mentioned the picture's most famous line:

Ballin: "Gilda, are you decent?"

Gilda: "ME?"
