Jean Cocteau's or Disney's.

I know they're different but...wich one do you prefer???

I like Cocteau's version a lot but I LOVE the Disney version. One of my all-time favorite films.

reply

I cannot decide, as I love them both equally. Both get very easy 10/10s from me.

I discovered the 1946 version when I was ten years old- and it was my introduction to films vs. movies. I saw it as part of a PBS program entitled, "Cinematic Eye" and it changed my life. I've watched it many times always discovering something new. Years later, I wrote a ninety page term paper on the Cocteau classic because there was so much to write about! There are films with depth for children, but the Disney film isn't one of them. It's not about "snob appeal", as I also happen to love truly dreadful, forgotten films such as "The Cool Ones."

The 46 version. Hands down. For me anyway.
Never really liked Disney movies that much. They are fun to watch, but they have never given me much. I DID like a few of the characters in it though. I will never be able to watch Cocteaus's version again without expecting a teapot and a candle holder to start talking.

I liked the 1946 version, but I felt it was highly overrated. Sure, the effects are terrific, as are the costumes, decorations, etc. Technically, artistically, it is fabulous, especially for the time. However, I found the actress who played Belle very irritating and unlovable. Also, the story is pretty thin as opposed to the Disney version, which is more complex on different levels. Both are enjoyable, but the 1991 version is the one I like most.

Don't be afraid to dream bigger :)

1991 version cost I love Disney and gaston was inn it best character in the movie I did enjoy this version but couldn't watch it repeatedly like the Disney one

reply

How is it overrated ? It's only at 8. It's one of the best movies ever made and was an insane achievement in 1946.
Disney's version is a washed up fairytale like most of their other works.

reply

Cocteau. It is one of the very few films I can describe as exquisite.

Disney version wins by a hair. Just watched the Cocteau version, and I forgot how amazing this film is. Both are excellent, but different.
