Anyone have any idea what it was Bim tries to give Don in the hospital? I assume its some kind of withdrawal medication.

shareIn the book, it's paraldehyde, and he takes it, with almost immediate relief of his withdrawal symptoms. I've never heard of it since, but Wikipedia informs me that it was used as a hypnotic/sedative until the '60s. It doesn't sound as if it would be quite as magical as the book says it is, but Charles Jackson, who wrote the book, was himself an alcoholic and so presumably knew what he was talking about.
shareThanks for the info - I thought it was something like that but I'd never have guessed paraldehyde!
Since it was around for a while, I wonder why it didn't appear in the Susan Hayward film 'I'll Cry Tomorrow' (the Lillian Roth story). Susan/Lillian was assisted by AA but just had to go through the DT's without any medical assistance.
‘Six inches is perfectly adequate; more is vulgar!' (Prime of Miss Jean Brodie Re: An open window).
THAT is the good thing about re-hab in a clinic or hospital
