I thought this would be well liked by women. But I see from the voting breakdown that it was very poorly rated by women and girls. Of 22 girls under 18, 15 gave it a one. That's amazing!
Anyone have an idea why?
I'm 21 and I think this is one of the greatest films I've ever seen. The only explanation I could think of, is that a lot of women said they didn't like Garance. Thought she wasn't that pretty, she was coldhearted and didn't see how those guys could fall in love with her. I think that it's kind of shallow to think about the leading lady like this; you just have to go with it and with the story even when you think she isn't that pretty. If I'm making any sense.
Does anyone know where I could get the restored one Pathe made on DVD or if there are any other good versions? I've checked Amazon, but I don't think those are that good of a quality.
This, I do not understand. This is about female empowerment.
A similar theme is used in Spike Lee's first feature, 'She's Gotta Have It', in which a young woman won't submit to any of the 3 men she's involved with.

In what way is Garance empowered? Throughout the entire film she is dependent on a man.

I highly doubt that out of the "22 girls" was there a single passionate cinephile or were truly qualified to give a coherent film analysis.
Anyway, 22 isn't a strong sample of anything. Too little information.
It could be bots too.
So I wouldn't take any imdb poll too seriously.
Also, mostly only cinephiles and the older generation that have heard or seen this film.
It is sad that such a masterpiece is overlooked, while crap gets glorified. But it's OK because at least these sublime films exist and we're lucky to encounter them. Better than nothing.
