It's got a poor average ratings because of the 'ones'

It's clear from the ratings breakdowns that this is a great movie. The ratings are mostly tens and the median is nine. The only reason it comes out at 7.9 (currently) is because of the inordinately high percentage of "one" votes.

I understand that not everyone will like it. But it seems to me that if someone dislikes this so much as to give it a one, did they really watch the whole thing? I mean this is over 3 hours long. If I dislike a movie that much, I quit early. And I DON'T give it a vote.

The ones are from idiots that instantly think it's crap because it's old and foreign.

At least the people who care about film know how important it is.

I agree. If I don't watch the whole thing---I'm not qualified to rate the whole thing.

Yup, here we go again with the women's morality brigade ganging-up to down-vote another classic movie.

Looking at the vote distribution for women over 45 yrs, you can see that 181 out of 473 women over the age of 45 rate this movie a "1" That's 38% of women over 45 giving the movie a "1" rating ... far, far higher than the general rules of statistical average would predict.

Of course this isn't really an unusual phenomena - take a look at user ratings for most of the World Cinema and Art House Classics, and you'll notice the same pattern.

The big question is, Why?

The women's morality brigade? What the hell are you talking about? You really think that these statistics are true? Don't be so gullible. The movie was probably in the Top 250 at some point, above some fangirls hype like Garden State and people registered fake accounts to vote it down. Why would women over 45 of all age categories vote down that movie? Think 14 year old fangirls creating fake accounts, they'll want to look as far as themselves as possible.

The big question is, Why?
Maybe that's a question you should ask yourself before you start shouting feminazi conspiracy because you actually believe ratings still mean anything on imdb.

Oh brother ...

Just ask fans of The Hobbit, The Dark Knight, or Django Unchained whether IMDB user ratings "mean" anything or not.

As for 14 yr. old fangirls setting-up false accounts as 45 yrs. old women to vote down 65 year-old movies ... I highly doubt they'd bother going to the trouble. How many 14 yr. olds of either gender have ever even heard of classics like like Children of Paradise, Throne of Blood, or Les Diabolique?

I don't think it's 14 year-old girls downvoting these films. Not at all.

As to the question of "why" ... I think it is indeed the feminazis. Most of these classic/foreign movies with signifcant numbers of "1" votes by older women are movies that emphasize "traditional" roles for women, or where the female characters are sterotyped and/or undervalued (C of P fits that description quite nicely).

Another factor has to do with who directed the film. Take a movie like "The Wages of Fear" by Henri-Georges Cluozot, for instance. He was known to be abusive to his spouse - Take a look at how many "1" votes from the female brigade that movie has! Same for all of Clouzot's movies, in fact. Weird, eh?

I think the plain fact is that these voters don't base their votes on the technical or artistic merits of the film at all, but rather use extraneous factors and their personal feelings as the criteria by which they judge a movie, i.e. Johnny Depp is soooo cute, therefore his movies get a "10", Akira Kurosawa portrayed women in a negative light, therefore "Rashomon" get a "1", etc. etc.

There's my answer to "Why."

So why would women over 45 be the perpetrators of feminazidom? Clearly you didn't really think this one out. After all, "women's morality brigade" sounds a lot more like women who support "traditional gender relations" than feminazis.

But the really answer is probably more simple: maybe women over 45 are more likely to be the kind of person who seeks out old movies to watch without having a developed taste, and so, expecting All about Eve, they wind up not liking some of the more artsy / foreign ones.

I guess it get the 1s because of its length.
