Bambi is a classic in every sense of the word, no doubt. However, I think what really makes it stand out is the art and animation and not so much the story and character development; possibly its short length is the cause. This perhaps was due to the finances at the studio during wartime. If the movie had been 15-20 minutes longer, possibly the screenwriters could have done more for the story and the characters, particularly the minor ones, including Flower, and as you mentioned, Ronno. Also it would have been nice to have developed the humans as characters: Are they actually hunters? Are they poachers? Is there a bounty put out on the deer? (I mean, come on, I'm sure they had no idea it was BAMBI's mother). Maybe it was a man taking his son/grandson on his first hunt, and the latter felt regret shooting the doe and leaving Bambi orphaned, thus the father/grandfather would have to explain about the ways of hunting and nature. Then again, some people are very sensitive toward the concept of hunting, even when it's done responsibly, so I don't know?
