The fact that we don't know her first name...

...is really genius!! The film is entitled '' Rebecca '', out of a woman we never see, and the main character of the movie, the girl who is the center of the plot, remains nameless!!!Truly great!!

pacino,nicholson,deniro,hanks in a movie by scorcese,written by tarantino...am i asking too much?

I like that the novel/film isn't named after the protagonist but rather the women who's life haunts her own, however I find the fact that she wasn't given a name to be a bit heavy handed. A better way would be simply to use her name less, or not at all, but to deliberately omit it entirely feels a bit contrived.

"Rebecca" de Winter is unusual given the period when married women were known by their husband's name, not their own. Mrs. Maxim de Winter would have been correct. Women were chattel so it is central to the notion of women in their class to have been known by her own given Christian name -- she was an individual. Only her immediate family and close friends would have addressed her by her first name.

I loved that they never mention her name. In the film, I first noticed it at the dinner table with Maxim's sister when she was starting to address her but hesitates and uses "dear" or some other term of endearment. That was when I started rewinding to see if they actually mention her name earlier in the film.

When it was mentioned that she had the same name as her father, I started getting it stuck in my mind that her name was Ashley.

I know, right? I watched the movie yesterday with my family for the first time and we all agreed how brilliant it is!!! It really shows the obsesion with Rebecca and how much the protagonist stands out AND actually, like we the viewers, has no name. We, the nameless viewers, are put in her shoes. Really smart.
