It's true, books usually offer a better experience than films, especially because they can give much more informations(in any kind) than the later, but that could also play against them. I've read many books, going from Les Misérables to Stephen King to The Prince to the Red Riding Quartet, with many many others in between, and I find that most of the time, you have a lot of crap to read through to get to the parts that matters, something that movies can get by more easily.
That said though, I must admit that only a very little handful of movies did impress me with their adaptation. But TGOW was one of them. To me, it was perfection, a masterpiece impossible to top in any way.
Granted, changes were made, and many people disagree with those, especially about the ending, but I for one was happy with it. In fact, I prefered the one in the movie. Tom's monologue gave me the chill, as did watching him leave out in the night. I just don't see where they could have fit a tit sucking hobo in this scene and make it look as moving and dramatic as it is. Maybe somewhere else in the movie but not in the end.
Director had to make a choice and I'm convinced he did the right one. The movie still was dark and depressing, as much as it was heart-warming and inspiring without this scene.
A rare cinematographic occasion that deserve a perfect 10 out of 10
