It seemed to me that Renoir pretended to show hunting as a cruel activity (think of the squarrel scene).

Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.
It's painful to watch and you feel sorry for all those animals...but then you realize it's a parallel between what eventually happens at the end. (Without "Actually" happening unlike with those poor rabbits)
