I am still in shock - of how boring this movie is

Alright folks. I am a great admirer of Hitch. I have seen quite a few of his classics and all but one have been at least satisfying (most of them were fantastic indeed). Most recently, I tried to watch "Lady Vanishes" because some hail it as his best from the British period, and the premise of a disappearing lady sounded promising. Unfortunately--and I really tried--I couldn't get past the first 30 minutes or so. I tried very hard to not turn it off, but it was impossible. What happened? nothing, absolutely nothing. The plot probably moved an inch forward. The only intriguing thing is that the musician on the street got murdered. Also, I had trouble understanding the English. I turned the volume as loud as my speakers had, but I still couldn't understand what they were saying, and the DVD apparently assumes just because there is English dialog, everyone that understands English should understand it. They forgot how different English from Britain can sound to a Midwestern American brought up in the Orient.

Anyway, I still don't want to completely disregard this film from one of my favorite auteurs. So I am asking you: if I absolutely hated the first 30 minutes of this movie, thinking it is boring as heck, does it get more interesting?

Oh I can go you one better than that! Try "Juno and the Paycock". ZZZzzzzz.

Juno and The Paycock isn't a Hitchcock picture. Hitchcock just directed the film, because he had no other projects at that time.

Hi fellow. I can tell you that you just not gave the movie a chance. In fact it's funny that you mention the first 30 minutes because you abandon just before the thrill gets on at 32 minutes into the movie. Little bit too much of impatience!!!

I watch about 15 Hitch movies yet (including 8 released before TLV) and TLV is the most thrilling so far (chronoligically speaking). I loved it and Margaret Lockwood looks lovely in this movie. I'd say she is the most beautiful actress in Hitchcock British period. Joan Fontaine wins the palm for Hitchcock Hollywood period with honorable mentions to the lovely Ingrid Bergman and miss Grace Kelly.

See you folks

Well, you have no understanding of how great Hitchcock is...and as such, one cannot expect you to develop a sense of awe for him, as you seem to not have any patience for good film

Well, I am a big fan of Hitch from Psycho, Rear Window, Frenzy....

In the first couple of minites I got an impressions that the TLV is non-talky movie, the introduction is awful, sound quality is horrible, tought to get into the story, some how I spent 30 minutes infront of the.

Once the train starts, the movie turns out really intersting, then on, you cant turn your eyes off and dont even care of the sound quality. It is pretty interesting to find the lady....

The climax was little boring and would have been made little interesting...

Overall the movie is good. Again Psycho is my all time favourite.

As others have said, the movie gets better as it goes along. Also, if you rewatch it, the beginning seems more nessecary in the second viewing.

there are so many characters to introduce and they have subtle relationships... the rest of the movie definitly benefits from taking it's time to get you aquainted with all of them.
