shareprobably...
haven't u noticed that everytime someone remakes a classic they ruin it?
well, if they re-made it and whatnot, it wouldn't be the same. It would be worthless unless the directors and staff and actors were top-notch, then i guess it could work.
I don't think it can be said that the remake of Scarface ruined it. Sure some people still prefer the origional (myself included) but you'd have to respect that the remake was hugely sucsessful and is more famous then the origional. I'd also say it became a classic in it's own right but that part is only my opinion.
There are a few remakes I think are very good. The Thing is another, although special effects make remaking easier. I liked the remake of The Ladykillers too. I would agree that the majority of remakes are terrible however and that the studios only do them for a quick buck. But that doesn't mean a remake can't be a good thing.
The problem with remaking The Public Enemy is finding someone that can perform Cagneys role. With the Ladykillers I thought Hanks was the right man to step into Sir Alec Guinesses shoes, but I just don't know who could do this one. Sure there are a lot of 70's gangster film veterans around but they are all too old now to play Powers, as are a lot of the trendy action stars (such as Tom Cruise) who would probably ruin it in any case. Di Caprio is about the right age and has the look, but can he act cheeky and psychotic at the same time? Christian Bale is also about the right age and is a solid actor but perhaps doesn't look quite boyish enough. Then again maybe they would want to go for someone in there early 20's instead to push the "punk kid stumbles into a life of crime" angle.
Then there is the big dilema, do you do it like in King Kong where you still set it in about the same period as the origional or do you modernise it like in Scarface and find a similar Gangster set up that is more relevent and recognisable to the younger audience. I would say with a Gangster film the update approach is probably better and I prefer that myself because there is more of a case for the two films complimenting each rather then just stepping on each others toes. Updatings not hard. Booze is replaced with drug, WW2 with Iraq and of course a load of blood and swearing thrown in.

I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.
Totally agree Fenris, finding somebody to fill Cagney's role would be the biggest headache, although I believe DiCaprio is rather underrated I doubt if he would bring the right kind of intensity to the role. One actor who may have played it a few years ago despite not being Irish is John Leguizamo (sp?) he was excellent in Carlito's Way playing a young punk. The Public Enemy predominately reflects the Chicago beer wars of the 20's with O'Bannion, Weiss & Moran on one side with Torrio & Capone on the other. Hollywood still hasn't done this story justice.

I don't think you could ever remake this film. Cagney dominated the whole film and it would be difficult to recreate a film like that. DiCaprio could never play this roll. A decent actor but hisw "Hard Man" performance in Gangs of New York totally rules him out in my opinion.
Russell Crow could perhaps pull it off...

I'd like to see Matt Damon give the Tom Powers role a shot
shareI think a young Tom Hardy would've made an excellent Tom Powers, perfect even, He actually did play a psychotic, sadistic gangster in the mini-series "The Take"- reminded in shades of Cagney and Brando's Stanley Kowalski.
shareI'd say Joseph Gordon Levitt for the Tom Powers (Cagney) role.
shareIn a very real way, it was remade in the first year of "The Sopranos".
Remember how in this movie Mom is a suffering saint and the priest is trying to reform Tommy ? How Mom and the priest are the voices of good ?
Well, in the first year of "The Sopranos" Tony's mother Livia is even worse than Tony and the priest is a parasite flirting with the edge of chastity. The only voice of 'good' in "The Sopranos" is Dr Melfi, Tony's shrink. How his doctor neighbors the Cusamatos are kinda turned on by having a mobster as a pal.
*beep* No! its perfect the way it is!
shareRemember when they were going to remake Casablanca with J HO and Ben Affleck, I mean yikes that was a close one!!
shareNow that would be AWFUL! I think a remake would be good just so a new generation can learn of the story and the original etc. If 'twere done, Scorsese would be my choice for director because he's like King of Gangsters but otherwise David Fincher cos i mean look at Fight Club (?) I would go see a remake as long as it was still set in the '20's but longer and with a top notch cats and crew. BUT it MUST stay in black and white; it just would look so much more stylish =]
shareI think the question is rather vague. What I mean is that remakes are either true to the original like the "Untouchables" or they put a modern spin to it like "Scarface". To me, the 2 Scarface are only related in name. The new version is a different story, although a very good movie.
If PE were remade I think of Daniel Day Lewis as Tom Powers and for Matt Doyle..hold yerselves, now...Johnny Knocksville. I think he was pretty good in "Walking Tall", although they butchered the entire story, another instance of relation in name only.
I think that if it were done in a fashion true to the era and attention paid to mannerisms and speech it may just float!
joedude
I agree about the director. What would you guys think of Joe Pesci as the Cagney role.
Maybe Charlize in the girls role
Be yourself, everyone else is taken
Marijuana, Meth, or Cocaine instead of alcohol...cellphones...mp3s instead of phonographs...white trash &/or blacks instead of Irish Americans.
...it actually probably has been remade....
Well, for starters, the remake would inevitably suck.
"Well, for once the rich white man is in control!" C. M. Burns
It would certainly be much more violent. I don't think that most directors today would cut away during the killing scenes. There would just be a lot more blood and special effects. Probably more sex too...
shareIf they remade it, they would do the same they did with Scarface.......every other word would be the F-bomb & gratuitous violence & blood galore through the whole movie.
share^
That IS True. They write some crap dialogue these days that can't seem to get the point across UNLESS there's a dizzying series of petty cusswords, gahh.....
Sad really. I miss the days when they made one-liners that made you think.
Try not. Do or do not. There is no try.

Does anyone know if the Johnny Depp film "Public Enemies" has anything to do with this film ? Is it a similar story ? is it a remake ? or is it completely different ?
Because if it is a remake, I doubt Depp could pull off the Cagney role... I love Depp, but he is not even close to the level of acting as Cagney was!
