Actually, in one of the Universal sequels (I forget which one) there are references by villagers or someone to the monster by name, and it's Frankenstein.

Son Of Frankenstein has Ygor say to Wolfe Frankenstein that the monster is named Frankenstein too. So therefore you are wrong.

DC comics some while ago had their version of the monster adopt the name 'Frankenstein' in-story just so they could call him that for convenience's sake.
