In the final scene, Van Helsing rermains behind when Mina and Harker depart the Abbey. I think he says he has something else to do. Perhaps he has to finish the job since to completely destroy Dracula he has to be beheaded and his head turned around to face the opposite way.

For a long time I took it that that's exactly what he was going to do, but as millsey says above (can't believe I just typed that!), his corpse does appear intact in Dracula's Daughter.
