Just to add to this thread, although I haven't seen a more beautiful film, The Road Home (1999) is almost as beautiful, IMO. Recommended.

For very, very different reasons than this movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey or Metropolis. A more similar example is probably La Dolce Vita. The ending of that movie is also one of the all time greats.

As far as great love stories... I've always thought The Princess Bride has one of the most beautiful stories in movies, yes very well-known and overdone to a point, but also, so satisfying and feel-good. I've seen it probably 50 times (or more lol). I just grew up with it.

It is with no doubt, beautiful, but in my humble opinion, there are a few contenders...

-Its a Wonderful Life
-Schindler's List
-The Green Mile

And there are some scenes in movies that are beautuful, maybe not in the traditional sense, but...

-William Wallace's "Freedom!" Cry in Braveheart

-Some scenes from The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Cinema Paradiso

I came here to mention that one. City Lights is one of my favorites, but I put Cinema Paradiso a step above it in terms of story complexity. It's as bitter sweet as I've ever seen a movie get.

Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, though it depends on what you mean by "beautiful."
