I own the box set and it contains all his feature films from Three Ages through to Steamboat Bill Jr.
Three Ages Go West The Navigator Battling Butler The General Steamboat Bill Jr. College Our Hospitality Seven Chances Sherlock Jr.
Starting with the Cameraman he went to work for MGM so those films are owned by a different distributor and luckily have recently been made avialable on one double DVD.
They also contain his complete collectioin of short films, not including the ones in which he costared with Fatty Arbuckle which I believe are available elsewhere. The shorts have been restored to their best possible condition although unfortunately some of the footage in his is simply lost and is represented as best as possible by still photographs and title cards. Still, One Week, The Playhouse, Cops, and others: They're all here.
There is also a wonderful DVD full of suplemental Buster material including the complete episode of the TV show I describe earlier in this thread, commercials he's done, a clip of his appearance on this is your life, and a brief sketch from The Buster Keaton Show. This last one is a mixed blessing. It shows how he never lost his talent but it also demonstrates that even a comic genuis like Buster can only elevate terrible material so far.
Every time I watch Buster I'm always gobsmacked about just how damn good he was. A true comedic and, more importantly, cinematic master. The man is a true hewro of mine. Even his stuff in the years following the coming of sounhd are pretty good. Fair enough their noit a patch on his classics, but sub-par Buster is still pretty darned good. 'Grand Slam Opera' is one that springs to mind as being particularly enjoyable. Anyhow, to the hard task of choosing 5 favourites:
Sherlock Jr The General Cops The Boat The Paleface
Oh, man, so hard to choose! By picking my five favourite Keaton films, I'm basically picking my five favourite films of all time. That man was brilliant. In no particular order: 1) The General (of course) 2) Sherlock Jr. 3) The Scarecrow 4) College 5) One Week
Oh, I almost forgot! Honourable mention definitely goes to The Railrodder! A very simple movie, but I thought it was adorable. While we're at it, Seven Chances is good, too. And Battling Butler. God, this is like picking your favourite child...
