It is easier to top the charts these days. Less people are buying albums. Fair enough.
But nostalgia has always sold well.
Just looked up the 1988 charts & the Beach Boys were making a comeback with Kokomo. Tiffany made a name for herself with a Tommy James song. Steve Winwood was biting off Holland-Dozier-Holland. There's a mashup of Baby I Love Your Way & Freebird. Neil Diamond got a reggae makeover.
I'd even argue that Michael Jackson was still riding a wave of goodwill from his Jackson 5 days. Bad still would've sold, regardless. The appeal just wouldn't have been so broad.
