My dad was on a U.S. Navy destroyer in the South Pacific in WWII. One day when I was a kid he sliced his shin open on the kick starter of his Harley Davidson. It was bleeding all over the place, so he took a slug of whiskey, then plugged in his soldering iron, gritted his teeth, and cauterized the wound himself.
