A recent National Research Group survey asked moviegoers to name the actors who could get them to a movie theater. The top answers all qualify for AARP cards: Tom Cruise (60), Dwayne Johnson (51), and Tom Hanks (66). Villeneuve says he cast Dune: Part Two with the future of cinema in mind. “I needed people who have the necessary charisma,” he says. “I think Florence, Zendaya, Timothée [Chalamet], and Austin [Butler], they will be the new power in Hollywood. These strong, charismatic figures will drag people back to the theater.”

I believed the Villeneuve hype for a while but he is losing the plot.

Although I do like him, seeing Dwayne Johnson on that list surprises me.

Spoiler: she did not

I guarantee you most normal people, and 90% of people not on twitter, have no clue who she even is.

Bless their naive heart. LOL.

People were generous in those interviews. None of them will actually go to new movies of Cruise, Hanks, Rock after interview.

And bless the heart of any producer or director that thinks that Florence Pugh is some movie star. Same with Timothée Chalamet. They are "critics darlings". And press keeps hyping them. But no one outside Hollywood press bubble knows them.

Reminds me when Jennifer Freaking Lawrence did a Jimmy Kimmel segment and went with microphone on streets of New York and asked people what they think of Jennifer Lawrence and her movies. And none of them knew who she was or knew but could not name even one movie. It was epic. They only knew Jennifer Aniston. And Hollywood was hyping Lawrence like new movie star for years. And still no one cared and knew.

Chris Pratt did similar thing. And No one knew him either. Despite him starring in so many blockbusters.

Literally no one knows Florence Pugh. Same with Timothée Chalamet. And Austin Butler is one giant nobody who got lucky to be in that Elvis movie. And was forgotten the next day after Oscars.

Here is that segment with Jennfer Lawrence

The movie star guaranteed a box office draw regardless of the quality of the movie. While those that are grandfathered in, can still do so - this is impossible going forward.

Too many movies and distribution platforms, too many celebrities and competing mediums for entertainment. IP and special effects crowding out the movie star in bringing in box office. Also increasing international competition/viewers are reshaping the industry. Movie stars are increasingly becoming commodities and the primary focus of being a good actor is often taking a back seat to being some type of influencer, or secondary career (comedian, singer, producer).

Also if anyone were to save movie stars picking her is a bit of a stretch. Out of that list maybe Chalamet, but I would be shocked if any of the others are still a factor in 10 years.

I think it's a moot question, because star power isn't more powerful than capitalism, and if people don't have the money, there's no actor in the world that's gonna put butts in movie theatre seats atm.
