Americans, the world is a tough place

I’m seeing on this board the typical American hubris and ignorance.

Here is the truth, Americans. The world is a tough place. Much tougher than even the toughest places in the U.S.

Many Americans love to go to other countries and refuse to adapt to their laws and customs. They think that they can get away with anything just because they are Americans.

The world is not your playground. Every country has their own customs and laws. When you enter those countries, you need to obey those laws. It does not matter whether you think those laws are just or not. It is their country and they decide what those laws are.

Brittany Griner chose to go to Russia and brought a substance that is considered illegal in that country. She is not a political prisoner or a prisoner of war. We should not be attempting to exchange important criminals for her.

Let this be a lesson to Americans. When you go to a foreign country, you need to familiarize yourself with laws and customs first. Always be respectful and follow those laws.

Typical world hubris and ignorance, speaking on America as if it's some tiny country where all of it is the same, with the same mindset . Come to west Chicago and tell me it aint as bad as a third world country. Also, since you clearly don't know, foreigners coming here and not obeying our laws has been a bit of an issue of late, one that frequently gets used during Presidential campaigns. And, just peruse these message boards. Most people think she is guilty and deserves her sentance.

They could have confiscated her goods (and handed them over to whoever their preferred person is at hand) and deported her and told her she will never be able to return. THAT would be an appropriate response.
I'm sure if they executed her, you all would shrug your shoulders and keep claiming SHE'S the one who's at fault, not the country that WANTS WNBA players to come over and generate interest and competition and $$.

Oh, and thanks for the lecture, Daddy-o. Gee, we never would have figured this out without your guidance. (sarcasm)

Not even the U.S. does that. You really need to educate yourself on how laws work.

Yes, very true about American's(in General) but most that choose to live overseas on a permanent basis usually behave very well. There's a huge problem with the West, not just America. I actually believe the junk they eat is one of the keys to the problem. Not eating real food has enormous drawbacks. Can't ever be happy except for the few minutes getting their fix. Can't ever lose weight, no matter how much exercise. Nobody around to stop them from ruining their lives. It's a vicious cycle and when American's(and Brits, Aussies, Canucks, Kiwi's) go overseas they take their misery with them. They just don't know it.

Griner is not typical of Americans.

She is typical of liberals, though.

1. Brittany Griner chose to go to Russia and brought a substance that is considered illegal in that country.

Response: She was stupid and did not use street sense the average American living near or in ghetto has. If you carry anything illegal, you need to stay with your sports team as there is strength in numbers. Authorities are more likely to let you go with your team. Also, she got arrested in the latter half of the month.

2. She is not a political prisoner or a prisoner of war.

Response: She is a political prisoner to a degree.

Her arrest was likely triggered by Russian quota system for arrest. As the month draws closer to its end, Russian police get creative in how they qualify crimes. Lot's of the suspect had exactly just enough on them to qualify for a higher crime. I bet this is what happen the Griner. She still had a chance to get out of this.

She's stayed there partly because she's black and gay, 2 things Russia doesn't like. And she's also there partly because of the war in Ukraine as this is standard operating procedure in Russia during conflict, take political hostages

3. We should not be attempting to exchange important criminals for her.

Response: 100% agree.

I am American and agree with you.
