I do not think this trend is going to continue trending. Beau is Afraid is a niche within a niche type film and I believe that Ari more than earned the right to make it, knowing that it would probably flounder financially. And as to Midsommar, yes it did less at the box office than Hereditary but I’m sure it did extremely well through streaming rentals and purchases, and streaming site payment inclusions…, it was on Netflix for awhile and Prime too I believe.
Everyone who watched Hereditary watched Midsommar as well as many who have not seen Hereditary, I would wager anyways. I love them both, almost equally but have zero interest in watching Beau is Afraid. That being said I look forward to Ari’s next film as I suspect it will be a niche type film but not as niche as Beau is Afraid, if that makes sense.
His next movie will be a "contemporary western-noir comedy" starring Phoenix once again. That sounds niche as fuck to me. Can't see a 'western-noir comedy' breaking out at the box office.
I’m not a huge fan of his work. I have never paid to see any of his features. I think I managed finish Midsommar but I’m unsure. Beau might have been a niche picture but it was terrible.
