Just curious, how many know the story of how she landed on McCain's radar? Interesting origin tale....

For those that don't know, her rise started due to basically some horn-dog conservative pundits and commentators (one was Fred Barnes, formerly of The New Republic, McLaughlin Group and I believe, The Weekly Standard).

What happened was, Barnes and a circle of conservative pundits within his same orbit (I can't remember all their names - I'm not sure, but I also think Tucker Carlson went along) kept hearing about this rising star from Alaska, so a group of them went up to pay her a visit and all of them came back writing and reporting glowing reports about this amazing new phenom and how beautiful and talented she was and that was the start of her national rise (I actually recall reading Barnes's initial article on her).

republicans also thought that Obama was going to pick Hillary as VP so they had to find a woman pretty fast. she just happened to be on the radar like you said and she was pretty hot at the time too. unfortunately we all found out that she was all looks and no substance.

It’s in the book game change. McCain wanted Joe Lieberman to form a unity R/D ticket. McCain was also considering a promise to run for just one term: the reason he was thinking about these unorthodox ideas is that he knew the odds of winning were slim; he felt he had to try something bold

His team vetoed the above ideas about Lieberman and promising to do one term. His team was leaning towards Pawlenty and Romney, but again - they knew McCain was going to lose with them

They went with Palin as a Hail Mary. They barely vetted her because her name came up quite late in the process
