Did she go woke and is now broke?

reply

She failed to reinvent herself in order to stay relevant. It is all about Ariana Grande now, Katy is old news.

Actually Rorikon was right, both Perry and Swift tried to get political and it failed. Pop songs can be political but if you pull it off it has to be so subtle that the audience doesn't notice. The audience noticed in both of these pop star's instances and that is only going to turn off some people which is bad because it will also tend to turn off the handful of radio station directors that determine which songs will be played and which wont. If your music no matter how good or bad gets heavy airplay you will sell a lot of albums, if it doesn't get heavy airplay then no matter how good it is the album will struggle and fail. Perry's crap this time didn't get lots of airplay. Ariana Grande is getting airplay even though her music is nothing but homogenized bubble gum crap.

reply

It worked from green day. But that was a different climate.

reply

Was also a different audience. Just like REM, but then like Green Day REM wasn't trying to get their music on pop station they were targeting college stations at the time. Some radio station embrace political shit or simply don't care what the message is... but pop stations tend to be less likely to play political crap.

reply

Green day was definitely targeting a mass audience.

reply

Green day was a punk or alternative rock band and they aren't the ones that are ever high on the pop rock station lists. If you look at their biggest selling album Dookie it wasn't filled with political messages either. Politics doesn't sell on pop station. Not to mention I'm not sure why you keep talking about Green Day, they aren't in the same category as Katy Perry by anyone's imagination.

reply

Yeah, not same category. But I'd say American idiot was there best selling album. And was huge on all charts. Very political.

reply

Only country were American Idiot did better than Dookie was the UK. World wide and in the US, Dookie was still their most successful album. In the US you could argue that American Idiot was their Dixie Chick moment that killed their success as since American Idiot their album sales in the US have been pathetic never even breaking half a million.

Lol... you guys necroed a 2 month old thread XD. I was merely making a joke but I'll take any praise :3.

reply

This is Moviechat, 2 months before another post isn't necroed... needs to be at least a year to really meet the threshold of a zombie post. I've actually resurrected a couple of 10 year old thread before just to see if they could live again, and they did. It only proves that people rarely bother to even look at the original post of any thread.

She probably has one more shot before the powers that be write her off. But what she really needs to do is tour again, when radio stations aren't helping to sell your shit the only other option you have is to tour and try to promote your music that way and the virus has put a stop to that this year.
