Unfortunately she might be another case of Anna Paquin syndrome

The preview scenes of her in R&J look pitiful and Ender's Game doesn't offer much cause for optimism, either. Might well be another case of the Academy irrationally falling in love with a kid actor who comes out of nowhere and steals the show in some artsy Oscar-bait film without really considering the possibility that their performance was a fluke (as in they simply cast a kid who had the exact personality profile that made them perfect for that role and that role alone). And that's where they peak because they simply don't have the range to really impress in other roles.

I hope she proves me wrong because she seems like a good kid, but right now I'm not particularly optimistic about her career for the foreseeable future.

You exist because we allow it and you will end because we demand it.

I have seen the "Romeo and Juliet"-previews as well and unfurtionally I have to agree with you. That looked really bad!

She seems to be a good example that you shouldn't get an Oscar nomination too soon. But there are some exceptions, like Saoirse Ronan.

It's far too soon for doom and gloom. She is 16 years old, she still has plenty of time to get good roles in good movies. I'm not saying that she will live up to her early oscar nom I'm just saying wait until she is in her mid 20's to judge. There aren't a lot of great roles for 16 years. And she didn't win her Oscar so the comparisons is on shaky ground.

A good sign for me, personally, is that she didn't appear in anything else until three years later movie wise and we'll get to see how they do. Agreed with the above poster that it is too early to truly tell and there really aren't many, if at all, good roles for kids her age. Every now and then we get lucky with kid actors who can perform. In ten years we cold be looking back and say how wonderful her acting has improved. Or not. Time will tell.

You're maybe right. But I think that we can be sure that doing "Romeo and Juliet" was a terrible choice for her. The reviews are coming out and they are particulary harsh towards Hailee: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/romeo_and_juliet_2012/.

I think the problem here is that in "True Grit" she played a very restrained character. While here she has to show much more emotion and vulnerability. From what I have seen from the previews, she clearly doesn't seem to be able to do that convincingly.

Not trying to doom her here. But she clearly doesn't seem to be on the same league as young actresses like Elle Fanning and Chloë Grace Moretz. I think that the role in "Ender's Game" might be more suited for her. So lets see if she has done a better job there.

Yeah, overall I don't think I've ever seen critics so brutal towards an actress before (who wasn't already considered a joke). If you're a Hailee fan though, it's good "Ender's Game" comes out so soon after "Romeo and Juliet" and that she already filmed so many movies. Unless she continues to be dreadful in those, her career will probably still be fine. Shakespeare is just a different beast.

The critics are so harsh because the expectations are very high for an Academy Award Nominee. That's why I am against kids being nominated for the Oscars. It's just gives them additional pressure in a buisness that is already hard enough for kids and teenagers.

I actually think the opposite: critics would have been harsher but being truthful to how horrible she is here delegitmizes all the over praise and hype they poured over her with "True Grit." I do feel a bit vindicated as I've always thought her performance was good but overrated.

FWIW, she apparently acquitted herself quite well in the two films that she was in at TIFF last month.
