You're right...her competition is Elle and Dakota Fanning, Chloe Grace Moretz, Sophie Turner, Saoirse Ronan, Liana Liberato, Bella Thorne, Alexandra Daddario, and Liz Olsen. All in the 17 to 25 range. I think she will be fine. I dont think she is as good as the Fannings, Olsen, Ronan, or Daddario (i know she is the only one in this entire group with an Oscar nomination, but that was as a child actor...doesnt require the same level of skill. being a child Oscar winner doesnt always guarantee an easy road to adult stardom. look at Anna Paquin. She won an Oscar as a kid and outside of the X-Men films she has barely had much of a career).
I see Steinfeld becoming more of a sex symbol/movie star type chick (like a Margot Robbie, Megan Fox, Scarlett Johansson type) more so than an Oscar contender every year. Her, Moretz, Turner, and Thorne are known for their LOOKS and driving guys crazy. Not their chops. They also dont have many female fans. So they will have to appeal to men by being sexy and taking on roles in action/genre films where they are the sexy love interest or sexy hero. Right now she is stuck in 'angry teenage girl with daddy issues' phase. She did so in Three Days to Kill as well as Begin Again. Both films I enjoyed but neither was a box office hit. Her headlining debut Barely Lethal went straight to VOD. Pretty embarrassing but she will be ok.
With her looks she will never be out of work. She is just in an awkward in between stage of her career right now. She's 18 as of the year 2015 but despite her attractiveness, still comes off like shes 14 or 15. Until she LOOKS more adult, its gonna be hard for her to transition into more adult roles and embrace the sex symbol thing. She needs an Oldboy (Liz Olsen had a nude love scene with Josh Brolin in that) or an Equalizer (Chloe Grace Moretz played an abused russian hooker in that) to show she is grown up. No more high school teenage crap.
