What's happened to her career?

It has undoubtedly fizzled off. Unlike her peers, she doesn't seem to have any upcoming movies that could establish her as a serious acclaimed actress.

She's only 17 and an Oscar nominee. Not many actors older than her can even say that.Give her some time. And I wouldn't exactly call her career fizzled out. She's got a couple more movies in the works.

Had the OP read her upcoming movie schedule, s/he would not have dissed HS with the "no career-establishing" films. At her age, pretty much any and all films are career-establishing.

Hailee Steinfeld with Romeo and Juliet (2013). After being Oscar nominated for her acting debut in True Grit, Steinfeld was hyped as a potential star of tomorrow with a number of offers for major projects. But she turned them down and took a few years off of acting, choosing to return with a new adaptation of Shakespeare's classic. But the film flopped and Steinfeld got singled out in the film's numerous negative reviews. Since then, a glut of projects featuring her, including Enders Game (which was not helped by certain remarks the source material's author made before its release) and Three Days To Kill have been released to critical and audience indifference and her potential has turned into a "what could have been" had she not taken that time off.

She needs to take some time off and recoup, or at least not sign onto projects that really do neither for ones career.

In saying that it's not she's getting onto projects which go straight to DVD if it weren't for its film fest premiere, it's just the roles she's taking aren't substantial -- neither lead or true co-lead. This is where I think if an actress under 20 isn't getting the top roles for her age (Elle Fanning & Chloe Moritz are beating her out for roles) that's when tv can work. TV tends to have better roles for younger actresses, but sometimes actresses who start off in film want to be in film because of its glamor and the belief that it's the way to a career.

Anyways, she's still young. If by 25 she hasn't had a festival hit where she's either the lead or co-lead then that's just proof of A) bad career choices in terms of roles and B) poor agent. One one good performance review and another can propel her career at that age into truly A-list. She can't ride the True Grit laurel forever -- she'd be silly if she did. Whoever her handlers are they need to get their stuff straightened out.

Cheesus, take it easy. She is talented but still very young and sculptures her career. I have hope for this actress despite the *beep* flick True grit. She showed great potential in that turd, but needs to grow a bit more and afterwards she will be a awesome actress. Hear me now and believe me later.

She should have striked when the iron was hot, not take some time off.

Part of the problem was that there arent lots of good roles for teenagers or young women in general.
Add to the fact that she has to fight the Fannings, Moretz, Sophie Turner, Saoirse Ronan, etc many other actresses for these scarce parts.

Pitch Perfect 2 should be a successful film for her though, apparently she's going to lead that franchise from now on.
