WHY???

shareI thought it was her way of acting out. I also don't think we're supposed to know why she wasn't speaking to keep her mysterious.
shareThe mysterious thing definitely worked.
shareBecause it was her first acting role and she has no previous experiences whatsoever. I guess the directors/producers are concerned if they gave her a speaking role she'll muck it up. Her ability grew though with time which is why she's finally the lead in series 3.
shareI think we will find out why she was mute by the end of series 4. Maybe she had gone through some kind of trauma when she was younger and the writers have been wanting to keep us guessing. Maybe she had been raped or something, that would possibly explain why she is so promiscuous. Just pondering. . .
shareI don't think she was actually mute. I think she just didn't bother, because everyone (except Tony) was just beneath her.

Beloved, I have missed your company.
Yeah, I definitely think she just didn't bother... But not so much that everyone was beneath her. Well, I guess that may be the case, but I thought it was more because she felt no one really listened, anyway. Didn't she say something like that one time? Like it's not like anyone cares or listens, anyway? I may be wrong... it could have been another character. Probably Cassie, now that I'm thinking about it. Whatever. I just think that people ask questions sometimes just to make themselves feel better and to make other people think they care... but very few people actually listen to the answer. Also, I agree with what everything is saying about the trauma in her past. I never thought about it before, but that would make a lot of sense considering how she ultimately wound up. The whole manic depressive/going absolutely *beep* crazy thing never made a whole lot of sense to me (to the extent that she lost it, anyway), but if she had some other deep dark secret (and we all know Effy had lots of secrets), then I guess that would have made a lot more sense.
