Hans Niemann 'likely cheated' in more than 100 games, investigation finds

Now Chess.com has produced a 72-page investigation into Niemann's games on the site, which most of the world's top players compete on, including for cash prizes.

The site, which has banned Niemann for alleged cheating, claims it is likely he cheated as recently as 2020, including in prize money events and against highly-rated "well known" figures in the game.

Its analysis compared Niemann's moves to those suggested by chess computers - which are far stronger than even the best players - and the probability of his results, among other factors.

"Overall, we have found that Hans has likely cheated in more than 100 online chess games, including several prize money events," the report said.

"He was already 17 when he likely cheated in some of these matches and games. He was also streaming in 25 of these games."

As expected the chess.com reported very little additional substance to what we already knew.

It pretty much backed up what Niemann had already said - i.e. he had cheated on a couple of occasions. I think chess.com is attempting to say it was hundreds of games in order to seemingly discredit that but it does largely seem that his cheating was over two periods.

What I don't understand is why chess.com has banned him again and now produced this "report" with nothing in it which isn't over two years old? It seems to be some kind of sleight of hand in order to back Magnus up but Carlsen accusing him of cheating in their face to face game has no evidential link to this report.

Point is he cheated in the past, twice in fact and the years weren't that far off. Rank 40 beating a Rank 1 in a opening move he either never played or only played once yet during the interview on discussing his moves he got the opponent and year wrong while being all over the place, basically not playing out the scenario how usual pros do which any one watching chess could detect something was off about him. His FIDE massive rank jump in such a short time is also raising questions.

That's not really the point though when he's already admitted to cheating in the past. All chess.com has done is back up what he'd already admitted.

They presented no evidence at all that he'd cheated online within the past two years. Given Carlsen's accusation that he believed he had been cheating "more recently" than he'd admitted, the fact that he apparently hasn't is quite worrying.

He said he cheated exactly twice, and never for money.

Chess.com is saying he probably cheated over a hundred times, including for money.

Yeah but if you check the chess.com smoking gun dirty dossier it pretty much shows the bulk happened over two periods.

I don't think anyone following the story and who knows that these guys are playing/ streaming dozens of consecutive blitz / bullet matches really took that to mean in literally two matches.

Plus they have nothing on him at all worth presenting for over the past 2+ years. And they (self proclaimed) have the best anti- cheat detection in the world. So Magnus' claim of recent cheating, along with their OTB game, is completely unsubstantiated.
