her oscar nomination is being investigated

In that article it has this weird sentence:

"Riseborough was able to secure a nomination without studio backing while frontrunner actresses of color, such as Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”) and Viola Davis (“The Woman King”) were shut out."

So it seems that the issue is that a white woman was nominated instead of 2 black women.
It seems like if Andrea Riseborough was black, this nomination would be welcomed, instead of investigated.

Very strange, it's like she is committing a crime by being nominated instead of black people. That's their main concern...

Race isn't the only issue, apparently she was the one nominee who didn't have a studio conducting the usual sort of expensive publicity campaign, she just got a bunch of actor friends to push her through social media and emails, at the last minute. Plus, she's one of those actors who's been putting in good solid work for years and years, without making it onto the A-List, so people felt like doing her a favor. So... maybe every publicist in Hollywood is feeling threatened, because she got nominated without a hit and without a publicist, and is calling for her head?

Because if race were the *only* issue, wouldn't they be looking at all the white nominees? They aren't, they're just looking at the one who didn't pay for the usual methods.

Anyway, this is probably the most publicity she's ever gotten in her life, and will gain her a lot of sympathy if she plays her reaction right.

It seems like The Academy is trying to cover their asses for the fact that no blacks got nominated this time around. It looks to be a form of spin control to get ahead of the backlash that The Academy most likely will get for not having any black nominees in that category this year. They had to come up with something. So I guess this is what they chose to use for the spin. I'm confident that if this same person was a person of color that there would be no investigation.

If the AMPAS leadership is trying to cover their asses, they're doing a piss-poor job. They could have talked about working on a more diverse population of voters, or discouraging the kind of big-money publicity campaigns that put *some* worthy nominees at a disadvantage. Instead, they're singling out the one nominee who didn't use a big-money publicity campaign, and frankly singling out the one competitor who had the least money to spend is a mean-girl bitch move.

I'm a die-hard old Leftie, and even I think this stinks, and makes me wonder if there's another reason. Like, something in the Hollywood establishment feeling threatened by a successful low-cost Oscar campaign.

This is the most hilarious thing about it all. Oh no, Viola Davis didnt get her 95-th nomination. Call FBI!!!

What even more hilarious that thry didnt highlight Cate Blanchett, Ana de Armas and Michelle Williams and didnt claim those 3 stole nominations from black actresses. Which Michelle Williams totally did as they keep and keep nominate her for her wooden one note acting. But no, poor Andrea Riseborough was declared racist and villain. I guess its because she doesnt have enough power and fame to protect herself ans is easy target.

Are you surprised? Welcome to 2023.

The whole thing just illustrates what a joke the whole nomination process and AA are.

reply

Can't blame someone else for the flaws in your own voting system. Besides, everybody lobbies.

reply

Exactly. In this case it was an actor's friends and colleagues doing the lobbying instead of a studio. I don't see much of a difference. If anything, having your fellow actors lobbying for you seems more organic and legitimate.

from wikipedia

According to Variety, actress Mary McCormack, the wife of director Michael Morris, hired two publicity firms to help organize a "celeb-backed campaign" to get Riseborough nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress.[7] While theretofore not widely seen or regarded as a serious awards contender, the campaign successfully raised the film's profile as dozens of celebrities publicly endorsed the film, praising it and Riseborough's performance on social media and hosting screenings during voting for the Academy Award nominations in January 2023.[17][18] Riseborough was nominated for the award on January 24.[3]

After her nomination was announced, there was media speculation that the tactics may have violated the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences rules against directly lobbying voters.[19] Academy rules forbid individuals from giving "their personal signature, personal regards, or pleas to watch the film" when sending correspondence to voters.[20] The Academy occasionally rescinds nominations if it is found that the nominee personally lobbied voters, though there are no reports that Riseborough did so; consequently, Clayton Davis of Variety wrote that it was "highly unlikely" that her nomination would be affected.[21]

On January 27, the Academy announced that they were "conducting a review of the campaign procedures around this year’s nominees, to ensure that no guidelines were violated, and to inform us whether changes to the guidelines may be needed in a new era of social media and digital communication".[21]

"Academy rules forbid individuals from giving "their personal signature, personal regards, or pleas to watch the film" when sending correspondence to voters."

But paying your publicist millions to put up billboards all over LA is kosher?

The Academy ought to review their rules, not Riseborough's nominaion!

reply

This is the most bizarre and hilarious thing. I keep reading news about it and cant understand whats their problem. They are offended that it wasnt big studio who bought nominations for their actors in a form of various bribes and arranging payed interviews and PR in press. And instead of that poor Andrea Riseborough just called her famous friends and asked them to compliment her work? And they are like offended: "No, your studio must pay for your nomination. Those are the rules!!! Dont break the system"

Cant they see how ridiculous it all looks?

I haven't seen To Leslie, but I believe she was good in her role. I loved her work in Mandy, but how she was even nominated for an Oscar?

To Leslie literally grossed only $27,000 at the box office, has only 2,000 votes on IMDb and 6,000 on Letterboxd and she's already nominated?

reply

The movie hasn't really premiered.
How are IMDb votes indication of anything?

The Eyes of Tammy Faye also had only a few votes by this time last year.
Till of the expected nominee Daywater doesn't have a lot more.

reply

i guess the academy members get a preview.

reply

Most studios send copies of their films to the Academy for consideration
