What is she?

For some reason, I'm convinced she's spanish. Anyone have any insight?

reply

she is roberto orci's (of fringe) half sister. orci's mexican. so maybe she's half latina too.

reply

Yeah I agree, she looks Hispanic

reply

I am from the Netherlands.. is Hispanic considered the same as Spanish in US? I thought someone from Spain is Spanish. What does it have to do with how somebody looks? Are you suggesting the Spanish are a "race"?

Well, in that case.. is there something like the Portuguese race, Greek race, Turkish race, etc.?? Because as far as I can see on my holidays in Greece and Turkey they are Caucasian/white race just like in Spain even though they have usually darker skin than people from northern European countries.

Americans are obsessed with race. Last time I was over there every single person I spent time with brought up the subject of ancestry and described in detail their own 'proportions'. i.e. 1/3 spanish, 1/3 irish, 1/6 cherokee, 1/6 bolivian, etc...
Not just work colleagues or friends, even waitresses and cab drivers would do it. No joke, it happened more than once every day. They hear a foreign accent and immediately want to talk about where you, and your parents, and grandparents, all came from.
Its a bizarre American thing. They get this strange pride out of saying "I am one sixteenth Belgian."

Is Spanish a race or a country? To Americans 'Spanish' means hispanic, i.e. Spanish speaking.

reply

Which country are you from, TCFuntimes? (No, I am not asking your race )

Spanish is considered the same as Hispanic? Now I remember. On government forms "Hispanic" is the race/etnic background, right? (and some people who fit in that box call themselves Latino I heard the other day)

I even remember a discussion on the Andy Garcia board titled "I thought he was white".. eh yes? something wrong with this person's eyes? Hispanic was considered a race by this person... like I said.. the Spanish people in Spain would be amused (or irritated) if you would say that to them. They can be white, black, mixed, whatever but they are not a race by itself.

For example: the Kardashians would be considered white in Europe. Their father is from Armenia, which is in the Caucasian region of Europe...

It's the same with Eva Longoria. Yes, she has a slightly darker skin but she told herself her other family members are blonde with blue eyes..

reply

america is obsessed with race because of the history of the country- we aren't as ethnically and nationally homogenous as most other countries.

hahaha! I am an American and I agree with your comment 100%. I find it so annoying and so odd. I have never done it. Of course, in terms of my family history, I like to know important and interesting facts regarding my Grandparents and their Grandparents. But that has everything to do with family love and in the interest of keeping alive the stories, struggles and experiences of the people responsible for my existence.

But, like you, I hear this silly crap all the time. Example: "Ya, dude, don't ya know that I'm 1/2 Irish, 1/4 Indian and 1/4 Scottish." blah blah blah...and yes, when they announce their supposed genetic recipe, those people take some sort of pointless pride. There are exceptions...I realize that there are people that have a genuine pride in "where they come from." I have a good friend whose father was born and raised in Ireland. Her Mum was born and raised in England. My friend has a very "Irish" surname and though she was born and raised here in America, she loves to take trips to Ireland and England. She visits her Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, etc. She has told me that she feels a real connection to her family's "homeland." That I can respect. But the other nonsense is just that...silly nonsense.

Yea its annoying. If I have to hear someone is 1/6 this and 1/2 that I'm going to bash them in the head with a pole. Yea because DNA breakdowns into measurements like that. *beep* morons.
