is she even deaf?

Is she deaf or just a hearing girl who likes to play deaf roles? I watched a few clips of her on YouTube. There is no way that she can be deaf. I'm Deaf myself and think it is saddening that there are so many deaf actors/actresses who are not getting roles because they are going to hearing people that pretend to be deaf in movies and tv shows.

No, I don't believe she is deaf. My friend and I have seen this movie trailer twice while at the movies and were also upset that she wasn't actually deaf.

She is really deaf. Here is a press release from ABC Family about the casting that proves it.

I question if she's actually deaf as well. I've read her tweets and she comments about listening to music and the rain. Now she may have hearing loss due to Melienre's Disease and is hard of hearing but I get the impression she's not completely deaf.

To be fair the ABC Family press does say they were looking at actors from the deaf AND hard of hearing communities showing that there is some differentation there. So I don't think anyone is neccessarily trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes.

Yes and that kid in the wheelchair on Glee isn't really disabled and can walk. So does it really matter? They're called actors for a reason and if ABCFamily decided that a "hearing impared" actress was good enough to play a deaf character than I say fine...

Ordinarily I would say it doesn't matter but the ABC Family press release makes a point of saying they have cast an actress from the "hard of hearing community" as the lead in "Switched in Birth." Which is not the same as deaf. And I agree that's fine because as you say this is but I've also seen her referred to as "deaf". And as I've said from her tweets and You Tube videos that doesn't APPEAR to be the case. So I can see where there would be some confusion over the matter.

As far as the comparion to the wheelchair-bound character on "Glee" is concerned Fox never said that they had cast an actor from the "disabled" or "physically impaired" community for the role. I'm not saying there's any deception going on but I can see where there might be some confusion.

In one of the early episodes, it is stated that her character, Daphne, has some residual hearing. So they cast a partially deaf actress to play a partially deaf character. And she acts well. I don't see a problem here.
