Aside from the likes of West and Mel Gibson generating headlines with antisemitic sentiments, Jews have been expelled from various countries throughout history. There was also that Austrian fella...
Why? I was told during my 12 years of schooling that Jews are targeted again and again, for no discernible reason whatsoever. There must be... something.
Mizrahi Jews in MENA-countries weren't disliked more than other non-Muslim communities pre-20th century. They were persecuted at times, but less so than other religious minorities.
Sephardic Jews in Spain had a great relationship with the Muslims.
They were expelled during the Inquisition if they did not convert to Christianity. Basically, it was a religious and political issue for the Spaniards.
Ashkenazi Jews on the other hand became extremely disliked wherever they went in Northern Europe. They stood out, physically, due to their Mediterranean appearance. They were treated with suspicion and became the scapegoat when something negative was introduced from the outside, due to their international lifestyle as traders. Then there's usury.
The horrible experiences of Ashkenazi Jews in northern Europe, and the rise of nationalist movements in Europe put them in a dilemma.
What to do in such a situation?
Try to blend in among the Polish, German and Russian Christian nationalists?
Some tried that, and they were treated with suspicion at best, or never accepted at all.
Create a Jewish form of nationalist movement? That's what Zionism is. A response to Jew-exclusionary nationalist movements. But it lead to a form of Jew hatred in the Muslim world that made the European one seem kind in comparison.
Work against all kinds of ethnic nationalism? That's what Karl Marx and other leftist, socialist and secularist Jews tried to do. But it lead to even more anti-Semitism among Christian Europeans. Now the Jews are blamed for feminism, immigration, sodomy, transgenderism etc.
So, basically, no matter what they did, they would be disliked.
This is probably the most simple and accurate description on the subject that I've encountered on this website. Of course there's only so much to say with that many words, but well done.
