Does anyone wish Glenn Frey and Don Felder had made amends with each other?
I did and felt sad that never happened.
shareI did and felt sad that never happened.
shareYes...I think they really did Don Felder dirty and then Glenn Frey's passing, of course. I'm kind of stunned that they are still touring without Frey and Felder. I'm a big fan of their music...but huge, huge egos. π’
shareMore so Henley and Frey than Felder, I thought Felder seemed like a nice, likable guy.
shareYes...I think Felder was really done dirty by them. I love Bernie Leadon to pieces, but Don Felder really took the Eagles' music up another level when he joined the group. He's a great guitarist and I agree that he comes across as a decent person.
Little bit of trivia: I believe Don Felder gave Tom Petty guitar lessons before he joined the Eagles. Two of my favorite musicians (I really miss Tom Petty).
I read Felder's book, which was banned in the U.S. I think at one point Felder wrote that he never had a big problem with Henley..probably meaning he didn't completely dislike him. However, Frey..wow, just wow. How many Eagles members quit or fired because of this guy? and the manager too!
In the end Felder got his share but man did they do their best to make him destitute. I think David Letterman read the book because he did a now classic bit on his show, teasing how nasty Eagles and their mgt. are.
Yes, I love Glenn Frey's music and appreciate everything he brought to the table with The Eagles, but he sounded like he was a control freak. It would have been something to see Bernie Leadon pour a beer over his head when he quit the group! π
I was such a fan of the Eagles' music when I was younger. And I still am...but all the backstage bickering and fighting has lessened my enthusiasm for them somewhat over the years. For me, I really loved "Hell Freezes Over"...but I haven't really been crazy for anything they've done since then. "I think "Long Road Out Of Eden" was decent, but not great (I think everything they did thru "HFO" was great). It's a shame, because there is/was so much musical talent in that band.
Felder told the whole story in his book..and imho he took the high road as he could have really tore into Frey..instead he just told the facts, which are truly beyond forgiveable..and yet Felder still forgave him in the end. Frey was the asshole..and that's saying A LOT since Henley is known to be extremely unpleasant. What's really amazing from Felder's book(which is a MUST READ) is that Frey said to Felder that He(Frey) and Henley were the real artists in the band, everybody else were just session players. Felder ended up calling them the rock gods. Felder ended up taking Henley, Frey, and Azoff to court where the evidence was so overwhelming they reached an HUGE out of court settlement. Felder ended up giving HALF of everything to his ex wife, saying she deserved it for going through such a horrible ordeal.
shareThank you for posting that and I thought that was all very interesting. Yes, I should read Felder's book (I'm not much of a reader anymore, but that would make a nice read this Winter).
Don Henley says he's not difficult, just opinionated. π I love him as a musician and admire his musical talent so much...but yes, I think he's difficult! π (Too many stories out there about him)
Felder really brought a rocking edge to The Eagles that just wasn't there before he joined. I really love his solo on "One Of These Nights"...he is an excellent guitarist. I definitely don't agree with Frey saying he was a "session musician." He was an integral part of the band from "On The Border" thru "Hell Freezes Over." I'm glad he got paid finally, but it never should have come to that, unfortunately.
I thought Walsh brought more of that edge than Felder, but they were good together. As for Henley, I think he's still difficult. Rick Beato might agree. Don probably had his lawyer send a cease and desist to some bar band that has Hotel California on their set list tonight.
shareYes, Walsh brought a "rock edge" as well and I agree that he and Felder complemented each other so well. Kind of ironic about Walsh...as hard as he could rock, my favorite Eagles' song of his is probably "Pretty Maids All In A Row," which is a ballad. I just love that song...The Eagles were such a versatile band musically.
I've read and heard that The Eagles are notoriously awful when it comes to copywright claims and all that stuff. That's too bad...50 years ago, they would have been thrilled for someone to hear their music. You probably aren't wrong about Henley! π
