People expect him to be a Tom Hanks or Tom Cruise level already? He's 32!

Get serious. He's still VERY early in the game.

You're comparing him to actors who've been established for 30 years to a guy who has been known for only a few years. He's very young and has a lot to offer, but it does take time to become established with the public and navigating through the right projects. I think he now knows what he needs to be looking for and what people are naturally more drawn to as far as movies go. These fanboys and fangirls are so quick to judge. None of you bring up the bright spots he had outside of the Avengers this year. He did have them.

Do you troll Bradley Cooper's or Michael Fassbender's board too? Hugh Jackman and Will Smith had some bombs in the last few years too, but looks like they're on the upswing.

Pretty much every successful actor will have a few flops in their career, usually early on is when it happens.

He is a likable guy and plenty of people are drawn to him. Most of the comments made by those who are aggressively against him are not even original or well thought out. It's like you're angry he's attractive or that you're girlfriend finds him to be so. What a sad life you must lead.

The fact is he is magnetic, and does have a strong on screen presence. He wouldn't be anywhere if he didn't.

But in a 3-5 years when he's become a legit draw, the same trolls will still be angry and posting the same crap while the rest of the world will know he's a legit movie star.

This. They act like he's the first actor to have flops.

reply

Aaaahhh, no, we're not trolls.

We just say: Here is an average, not-very-interesting actor that is pushed into leading man status

without actually having the talent for it.

People don't understand the game has changed completely for movies. They're thinking old school for what it meant to be a draw in the 90's/early 2000's. This movie should have been placed in September instead of being right against Star Wars. "Moby Dick" is a little bit of a hard sell anyway.

Chris has already proven he has a lot of talent. Of course, there is always "that group of naysayers" for everyone who is in the business. His are loud right now. He's gonna do great though, I'm sure this isn't a super fun time for him right, but there's a reason why people see special qualities in him. It's not "just producers" Talk to people in real life, most like him, they just want to watch him in fun things right now.

He has yet to move "beyond Thor," as far as the public image goes. Chris has the talent, but at the moment its almost like The Rock going straight to playing Hamlet after the Fast and the Furious. Is the Rock good at Shakespeare? I don't know, but I can tell you that hardly anyone would want to watch him in something that wasn't fun action right now.

It seems probable that most of the 1.3 million people who follow him on Instagram are fans. OK it's not Justin Beiber levels but that is still a whole lot of fan numbers.

Tom Cruise was the biggest movie star on earth at age 32. Tom Hanks hadn't quite reached his commercial peak but had just come out with Big--and was a bigger star as a result than Chris Hemsworth is now.

reply

Musicians always have more than actors. Plus Chris hasn't been on there for very long, but it was a good move to endear him to more people. He's only been on there for 2 months, a lot of Beiber's are left over from the last six years pretty much

Another problem with ITHOTS was that the headlines were all about Chris and a lot less about the movie. So yes, they got a lot of clicks but the marketing strategy for this movie and the release date is what hurt it most.

reply

Yeah, the marketing seems to have misrepresented the actual movie. Putting so much emphasis on Moby Dick, seems to have confused people. As the subject wouldn't universally be enticing to a large audience.

Poor Chris has not had the best year when it comes to the movie audience and Box Office. One paper, Black Hat with Michael Mann and ITHOTS with Ron Howard looked like amazing projects to work on. Especially as he was so committed to this last movie and has worked so hard at promoting it for the last few months.

What I don't understand is that Howard explained more than once that the movie was put back to December because the prescreenings had been so positive and December would be the better month for the public to see it. Giving raise to Oscar rumours. Obviously with Star Wars, Hunger Games and Spectre out - this would always be an uphill battle.

Exactly. People aren't going to movies for the actors anymore. Put Tom Cruise in Chris's role in ITHOTS, it would be doing exactly the same it's doing now at the box office and critic reviews.
