What do you think his Oscar chances are this season?

He could be a dark horse nominee, but I would say unless his performance is universally praised, he won't get in. You touched on some good points, but the issue here is politics and the studio/industry isn't giving him any pre-release buzz. These awards are so political that campaigns start as early as possible. If a studio/distributor thinks a performance has a shot at a nominations, they plant rumors months ahead of time about how great it is, even if only 3 people have seen it. It helps too if the character you are playing has social relevance (see Eddie Redmayne), or if you have some type real-life angle to sell (I.e. DiCaprio being overdue to win).

Right now I would argue the only shoo-in is Fassbender due to the overwhelming praise he is getting at the film festivals. Depp's reviews have been good enough and he has the "comeback" narrative, so I would bet on him as well. Regardless, the politics aren't in Chris' favor and you are right about him winning at an older age.

At the very least, it might be like Rush and he gets general buzz about his performance. And that could hopefully lead to other meaty roles.

I won't lie, I would love to see him get a nominee somewhere, maybe a golden globe. I think you're spot on, though. I do want him to get more marks for his acting. I don't think people realize how difficult some of the parts he takes on are. Hopefully 2016 will be a very positive year for him. I'm excited about what's coming up. I wanna hear more about "I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive." since it's been pretty quiet.

Over all, this should be a very interesting year at the awards.

I've been waiting for a thread like this to come up. I feel that there is a possibility for him to be nominated, but to be very realistic, the lead actor category is by far the most competitive, of all the acting categories. Also, he's still pretty new in Hollywood and young, so the academy probably won't be too quick to nominate a new, young male actor, as oppose to new, young female actors. The safe bets this year we can say so far are Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant), and Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs). It's too early to say who the fourth would be but Chris could be the possible fifth. It also helps that his film is being released in the middle of December.

Right now I say he has maybe a 50/50 chance. But anything could happen when the nominations are announced, so he could be that "surprise"/wild card nominee.

I'm so conflicted regarding the Oscars XD The movies that usually win isn't my cup of tea anyway and I would never think any less of my favorite actor for not being nominated. But at the same time it would have been fun if he was.

But then there's the so called "Oscar curse" ;D lol. Anyway he's still young. He's getting jobs. He can be perfectly successful without an oscar statue on the shelf.

Honestly, one of the things I hate about the Oscars is how into the "fresh ingenue" thing for females. There are great young actresses, but if you consider the academy is mostly made of older men, then I have to roll my eyes.

I also have to agree on the posts listed above. If you consider Liam Neeson was only nominated for one Oscar in his career then you're absolutely right. I would love for Chris to get nominated a time or two, but winning quite a while later time.

There's a few, mostly of other cast members joking about his beauty, and then Jimmy Fallon 's water war. His SNL stint, there's a LOT to be found. haha!

As much as I would like him to succeed, I don' think he has any chance this year or in the near future (maybe at an older age) at winning an award. In some reviews ctitics are still doubting his acting abilities and question his relevancy (box office draw.) I even read an article about him being compared to 90's actors (meaning he is two decades too late). Being the so called new Brad Pitt is more of a hinder when it comes to award chances.
I think he is getting there though, making fun of his looks may help in the near future. I sort of agree with the path he has taken, mixing action oriented roles with comedy. Drama might not be his true calling, neither are low budget projects which is a shame, because he could really prove himself in indie projects. I don't think the academy will award him unless he truly steps out of his comfort zone.
The true objective in his case to be taken more seriously and not just as a pretty face, awards are way ahead...

Well, certain critics may keep their bias for whatever reason. That's their prerogative. Most people I talk to in real life really like him quite a bit. I understand what you're saying about the "90's" actor thing they were referencing, but I actually think it's working in his favor. In a time when there are so many manchildren, hipsters, and actors qualified to be on the short sheet of Dr. Who, it's nice to have someone as unique as he is.

He just seems to bring a lot of sincerity in his roles, Brad Pitt never seemed all that authentic to me. What helps is that Chris seems like a very nice guy in real life. You never hear about him sleeping around or punching people or throwing things. He doesn't seem to have any desire to be a tabloid whore. Let's face it People are over the "dbag actor" thing. I hope he keeps picking good projects cause I want him around for a long time.
