Helicopters are death traps! Don't ever take the chance!

I heard news about the crash at a local store, where all the customers were all in a tizzy discussing it. Right away, there was "that guy." You know--that guy that says that air travel is the safest form of travel.

Are you kidding me?! Copters are horrifying death traps that both severely injure and kill people all the freaking time. I live in NYC, and we've had more of these accidents than I can count, the most famous one involving Jane Dornacker, who I heard die on the air in 1986! Before that, the worst accident happened on the Pan Am building, where a B movie director was beheaded by the rotor blades, then sliced other victims to ribbons as it went down.

Recently, a copter went down in NYC, and the passengers hit the water completely conscious, but then drowned like rats because they were strapped into their seats.

Here's a lovely video of inside a copter as it crashes. Fun stuff: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Efv0Rp2Bjpk

I know, I know. You can die in your house slipping in the bathtub and shit. Yeah, you can. But at least you won't be screaming to your death as you fall or drown to death.

I don't know: bikes, boats, ships trains, buses, planes, helicopters, walking...none of it is 100% safe, yet when something like this happens it's still sad & tragic. There's so many safeguards already, I guess there just isn't much more to do, and being afraid to live isn't the way to go either. Part of Kobe Bryant's legacy, I think, is that he did the best he could to live and be true to his nature. Still, the death of these 9 people on which was just a regular day for them is just terrible.

Agreed. Totally love flying but I'm never going to put a foot into a helicopter.

reply

There's a misconception that helicopters are some what safe cause you can just autorotate to the ground if the engine goes out. But more often than not they drop out of the sky like a stone when there's trouble. I'll take a single engine plane any day of the week over a chopper.

reply

choppers should be outlawed from Los Angeles

reply

I would never step foot on a helicopter, you'd have to take me kicking and screaming to get me on one. Once they go out of control,it's hard to get that control back.

Look what happened to Vic morrow, very sad indeed.

reply

Morrow wasn't even a passenger. The stunt was mismanaged to say the least.

reply

It's still tragic and a dangerous stunt they were trying to do.

reply

Safety precautions were not taken, plus the kids were working late at night which was a violation as well. Families got paid over it.

reply

it's all about the money, buck

reply

most things are

reply

Hearing those rotor blades is enough reason for me not to get close or even on board the helicopter.

reply

people walk into those blades all the time because the sound is deafening and becoming disoriented is a high probability

reply

NO...THEY DONT..THE ACCIDENT RATE VERSUS MANNED HOURS WITH HELICOPTERS IS BARELY HIGHER THAN THAT OF A CAR,EVEN WITH ALL THE MILITARY AND RISKY BUSINESS HELICOPTERS ARE COMMONLY USED FOR,WHICH DRASTICALLY ALTERS THE NUMBERS THE WRONG WAY.

reply

Also, from what I understand, when they're spinning, they can look completely invisible depending on the angle that you're viewing them from.

reply

LMAO. THEYRE 3 FEET OVER YOUR HEAD...TRY NOT DOING JUMPING JACKS UNDER A HELICOPTOR.

reply

tru dat

reply

Even a 747 can glide(kinda) w/o power and possibly land in relative safety. A helicopter, like you said, it's a ROCK. If the props stop at cruising altitude. OH MY GOD.

Helicopters crash about 35% more than other aircraft but slightly less dangerous because you're more likely to live through a helicopter crash.
