I assume your both Americans, right? Nothing against, but it is a common knowledge in Europe that USA has pretty bad georgaphy teaching is their schools, so for anyone to know countries besides few most known ones (UK, France, Russia), is up to themselves to find. I don't envy you, really.
But to answer, Latvia is a Northern European country, one of three so called 'Baltic Republics', along with Estonia and Lithuania. They gained their independance from Russia in 1991, as they are former Soviet Republics. Latvia's capital is Riga and currently they have 2,3 million people living there.
