Great creative talent, but

unfortunately this guy set a bad precedent for tv and film writers from Gen Y and Gen Z. I didn't really think about it until I was listening to a discussion on YouTube from some guys who had worked in television in the past and were experts on pop culture from the last 40 years. A huge problem writers for tv and movies have today is a.) they have no real life experiences beyond the LA Basin like writers from the WWII, Boomer, and Gen X generations did, and b.) they apparently grew up watching Joss Whedon's stuff and now want to make every tv show and movie they write to be like one of his works (particularly when superheroes or just sci-fi and fantasy in general are involved).

I hate to break it to them, but not everyone can be Joss Whedon, and frankly, if they were trying to imitate his work, they're doing it very poorly, which is one of many reasons why they need to define their works without trying to copy someone more talented than them.

The irony is that joss whedon himself is mostly a hack

I love his earlier works, but having every movie and show feel like his gets old fast, especially when writers do it poorly like you said. And when they're not copying Whedon, they're copying the edgier James Gunn, who pretty much filled the void when allegations against Whedon destroyed his career. Funnily enough, Gunn beat his own allegations.

Their styles are not a one-size-fits-all for nerdy IPs, it doesn't work on all of them. I don't wanna see Lord of the Rings or Star Wars with that style; that last DnD movie tried it and it didn't work for me. DnD should be an epic like LOTR, not some Avengers/Guardians/Suicide Squad wannabe.

Modern writers are copying Joss Whedon and James Gunn and they suck at it. They think they're funny and clever when they're not. But the MCU has dominated the box-office for 10 years, so studios think that's what everyone wants to see in every movie, TV show, book, and video game, and that's why they now only hire writers with that style, even if they suck.

Yep, pretty much covers it. I didn't realize that this was what they were doing until someone finally pointed it out, and now it makes more sense.
