What a beautiful woman in her time
That's all I have to say.
shareOne of the most beautiful. I just saw L'eclisse, what a woman.
shareundeniably true.
but i have to admit antonioni films are a lock that i cannot pick.
the only one i've genuinely enjoyed is blow-up.
i just finished watching the passenger, and i feel like it anesthetized me. i got nothing from it but a numbing boredom that made me wish i was doing anything other than watching it.
l'eclisse & red desert had the same effect on me. i remember liking la notte a bit more, mostly for an ending that i thought really worked.
i'm sure i'm an uncultured boor who knows nothing.
but my god i find his movies boring.
not the point of the thread, but i just finished passenger when i saw this pop up here, and i had to come here to express my boredom.
Lol, The Passenger is one of my all time favs. L'eclisse was extremely good too.
Smoking some herb helps transport you to the time and place. Loving history helps in watching classic movies. I'm so interested in different times and places.
i hope this doesn't sound like a defensive response, but i feel like i'm open to experiencing films as a way to know what life was like in a different era or country or whatever. it's one of the greatest things about film, & novels too of course, in the way they can really give you the opportunity to know what it might be like to walk in someone else's shoes.
all i can say is that, of all the great directors, antonioni is the one who's given me the least amount of satisfaction. i can honestly sit here and say that i'd rather watch...eh, i'll name stalker just to pick the most blatantly dull film i can think of - i'd rather watch stalker 15 times than sit through l'eclisse again. i just found nothing in it to latch onto.
that's on me, no one else. any time i don't enjoy something, i'm always happy to accept that the problem is with me, and that the director wouldn't have made it if he didn't think he was doing something worthwhile.
but it's a big world and we're all entitled to our preferences.
For real man, I agree with you, we can love the same thing (film) but still have different tastes.
It's hilarious you keep picking some of my favorites, Tarkovsky to me is like the greatest director ever, but I'd pick Andre Rublev as his opus. The way he moved the camera is unparalleled. Ozu and Antonioni are right there too, for me personally.
I think Goddard and Truffuat are overrated as hell but I won't argue with anyone who thinks they're great directors, I can understand why people think that.
oh, i should clarify that i really love tarkovsky & stalker in particular. re-reading what i said above, i realize i probably made it sound like i hated it, which i don't at all. i just hold it as sort of the pinnacle of droning, dreary films that would make most normal people want to watch something else.
my tarkovsky top 3 are probably stalker-sacrifice-solaris. i've only seen andre rublev once, & that was a good length of time ago, & have to admit it didn't really leave an impression on me, but i'm certainly open to watching it again some day when i'm ready to take on its epic length.
Nice, get real comfortable if you do. The last one I need to watch is The Sacrifice. To.round out my top 3 I'd put Solaris and Nostalghia. Oddly enough, the only one I dont consider a masterpiece is the mirror, but id also be open to a rewatch at some point (with better subtitles).

shareWell, she's an old woman now, but she has to have been one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen.
shareBefore I was just curious to find a photo. Then, it became a challenge since I always find recent photos of celebs. Sadly, I found out she has Alzheimer’s disease. 88 years young!
I think she aged pretty well similar to Sophia Loren.
