The Trump administration has sent an earthquake through the medical research community. The National Institutes of Health is going to be cutting funding by $4 billion affecting local researchers who are working on everything from cancer to HIV.

Because "F*ck you Americans".

I guess we have one less worry about getting denied health coverage from UnitedHealthcare now.

reply

Noooo but the transgender mice noooo 😭😭😭

reply

The argument would be a lot more convincing if they gave a list of accomplishments, how much the research money was every year, what are the results?

Or is it rude to ask?

reply

Specifics from Ranb? LMAO fat chance!

reply

Reports like these trying to trigger emotional response, without giving any details.

I've seen more and more reports like this.

To me a lot of obvious answers were not asked? None of the statements was challenged in anyway.

But that is mainstream media, I always remember to look for facts, a lot of times none is found, we are only given opinions.

The NIH is not some obscure little program that few people have heard of.

I think it is suspicious for anyone to act like they have never heard of the National Institutes of Health.

reply

Interesting, in 2023 grants are more than $47 billion, and they cut $4 billion, that sounds modest.

That is one of the necessary facts conveniently not in the article.

Or is it only allowed to ever increase, any cuts humanity will end?

reply

Costs typically rise over time. Are you expecting medical research to become cheaper? Ever heard of inflation?

reply

I expect worthwhile studies come and go, there should be up and downs.

Not forever increasing. That would be increasing budget for the sake of increasing budget.

In here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Institutes_of_Health#Coronavirus_vaccine

It basically says NIH conducted COVID research in Wuhan, I remember in a video Dr Faraci said that too ("You don't do COVID research in the US, you do it in Wuhan."), before it became a pandemic. I think Musk was saying NIH created the pandemic, maybe there was some truth to it.

reply

Also the "Notable discoveries and developments" section, nothing after 90s, but funding at least tripled.

What happened in the past 25 years? And that is tens of billions per year.

Is sitting on your hands the best you can do? https://irp.nih.gov/catalyst/33/1/breakthrough-research

reply

That is the result I assume after spending around $50 billion in 2024? Underwhelming to say the least.
