New York attorney general files civil fraud lawsuit against Trump, some of his children and his business

The New York state attorney general filed a sweeping lawsuit Wednesday against former President Donald Trump, three of his adult children and the Trump Organization, alleging they were involved in an expansive fraud lasting over a decade that the former President used to enrich himself.

In the more than 200-page lawsuit, Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat, alleges the fraud touched all aspects of the Trump business, including its properties and golf courses. According to the lawsuit, the Trump Organization deceived lenders, insurers and tax authorities by inflating the value of his properties using misleading appraisals.

“These acts of fraud and misrepresentation were similar in nature, were committed by upper management at the Trump Organization as part of a common endeavor for each annual Statement, and were approved at the highest levels of the Trump Organization – including by Mr. Trump himself,” the lawsuit states.

They're seeking $250 million. I thought it would have been more than that. But you know what they say. When the penalty is just a fine, this means it is legal for the wealthy.

reply

So they are going after Ivanka as well?

reply

They're going after Donald Trump and three of his children; Donald Jr., Eric and Ivanka.

I don't think any action will be taken against Trump's 1st wife (ex) unless they exhume her casket to check for more incriminating evidence.

reply

I seriously doubt they take any action against Ivanka. She seems like the smart one and no doubt covered her tracks very well.

reply

Trump is unhappy that someone else is not kissing his backside.

Trump did say "Bye bye!" I wonder if he selected a country without an extradition treaty with the USA to flee to?

reply

At this point, it's not about the fine. It's about exposing him as a fraud.

You celebrate this stuff as if it’s occurring in a vacuum and there will be no retribution against the national politician you like when Republicans return to political power. Where do you think this is going to evolve in 10 or 20 years? Do you think there is an absence of federal statutes and common law that can be employed by the opposing party to investigate and prosecute President Biden and his family when he no longer has the immunity of the office and the power to pardon? Do you think the specter of relentless, never-ending criminal jeopardy of an outgoing president will encourage the future peaceful transfer of power and acquiescence to close election results by one term presidents? Do you think it benefits America’s moral position in the world when all future presidents must issue preemptive pardons to themselves and their family and administration members to forestall the inevitable post-presidency criminal litigation by political opponents? Do you think it encourages good people to run for office as we inevitably devolve into politically motivated tit-for-tat investigation and prosecution of all prominent outgoing officials?

reply

It will be a very sad day when a prosecutor hesitates because the criminals will not like what they are doing.

What are these imaginary statutes you're referring to?

I think prosecuting the outgoing presidents who try to unlawfully stop the transition of power will only make it better in the future.

Not a single Trump family member has needed a pardon from a president. Even if Trump pardoned his kids, this would not help them with state charges for criminal or civil activity prior to the election.

YES

reply

You are talking as if Donald Trump is the first politician who has ever came under legal scrutiny.

The indictments he are experiencing are only extraordinary because nobody so crooked and amoral has ever held office before. As far as we know.

I'm pretty sure you are not promising that if the courts let Donald off then in return nobody will investigate Biden too much (for what we are completely in the dark about).

reply

...Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat...

Oh, really? Yawn...

reply

Yes. I'm shocked. I didn't think anyone was interested in doing more than talking about charges.
