General Motors - Winning?

So much winning.

According to AP News, GM is slashing 14,700 factory & white collar jobs in North America; may close five factories.

Merry Christmas factory workers! Pay no attention to Trump's job-killing tariff toughness.

But Trump gives himself an A plus for his term so far. (He's really, really bad at numbers & reality)

reply

The federal government took over GM and Chrysler in March 2009. It fired GM CEO Rick Wagoner and required Chrysler to merge with Italy's Fiat S.p.A.

The Obama administration used the take-over to set new auto efficiency standards. That improved air quality and forced U.S. automakers to be more competitive against Japanese and German firms.

reply

Last I checked, Trump was president. Last I checked, he inherited the job from Obama.

Maybe "But Barry started it!" might work if you're in Kindergarten but, out in the real world of adults, things don't work that way. It was lost on Trump's watch and he hadn't done a damn thing to correct the issue.

reply

The U.S. government’s $80.7 billion bailout of the auto industry lasted from December 2008 to December 2014. The U.S. Department of the Treasury used funds from the Troubled Asset Relief Program. In the end, taxpayers lost $10.2 billion.

The Big Three automakers asked Congress for help similar to the bank bailout. They warned that General Motors Company and Chrysler LLC faced bankruptcy and the loss of 1 million jobs.

reply

You are smearing the bailouts because it has Obama's name attached to it and no other reason. Don't lie to yourself.

This is a result of Trump's tax cuts. The tax cuts allow GM execs to make record profits regardless of labor so they can focus more on increasing the value of their stock. Automatic profits from tax cuts and increasing the value of their stock point to the same conclusion: fire their employees who own shares and buy them back.

This is the crony capitalism we've been warning you about, and told you well in advance that Trump was a major player in.

reply

How did GM go bankrupt before there was a tariff and not after?

reply

Magic!

or bad business practices...

reply

Wow! Now that’s a really dumb question. Explains why you’re a T-rump supporter.

reply

Thank God Obama saved the American auto industry when he did. And he made them more competitive, as you point out. And made them profitable, once again as they paid every penny of their bail-out.

Now T-rump tariffs have sent them packing. Just like they did Harley Davidson and so many other companies. #BeBest

reply

RE: the Obama bailout after the GOP's Global Financial Collapse -

General Motors PAID BACK WITH INTEREST every cent they got from the government in the bailout.

Not only was GM saved - but auxiliary businesses were saved. Jobs, towns, families were saved.

reply

Do you think these trolls purposely forget factual history or do you think they're really just ignorant to factual history? I really can't put my finger on it sometimes.

reply

They never knew the history because they were too busy being brainwashed by Fox News.

reply

You really have no idea what you're talking about,do you?

reply

It's arithmetic.

Count it up, it's really simple.

Count up the amount pledged by the Bush Administration.

Count up the amount added by Obama Administration.

Add those numbers.

Subtract the amount that GM & Chrysler paid back.

reply

"Reading, 'Riting and 'Rithmetic."

They constantly fail at all three.

reply

The cable news channels keep playing the clips of T-rump saying auto manufacturing jobs 'are coming back to America', and he will 'build new factories for the automakers', etc. LOL

reply

Sedans have been being phased out for quite a while now by the big three.

reply

The average price of a new vehicle is $40,000 to $60,000. Who can afford that? No wonder they are going bankrupt.

Who is buying these vehicles?

reply

Ford's CEO said that the company had lost $1 billion due to new tariffs on imported steel and aluminum.

Ford Fiesta costs $14,000. Buy that!

reply

Bubba can't fit into a Fiesta. Not sure how you can lose a billion dollars in just a few months. On the flip side, Whirlpool is expanding production with a new plant.

reply

The wealthy republicans who got all their tax breaks last December can afford that. Their tax savings have yet to trickle down.

Pretty soon you will be able to afford it, just as soon as T-rump creates those millions of high paying six figure jobs he promised. #JobCreator

reply

Just saw an ad for f150 club cab 4x4 for nothing down $190 a month for 2 years

reply

Was this 1978?

reply

Those ads aren't for any realistic buyer. If you have the perfect credit required, you aren't buying a base model vehicle that they are talking about. And it's probably a unrealistically low mile lease too. I used to work for a car dealership,I know the stuff they do.

reply

There was a bunch of fine print at the bottom that my eyes couldn't focus on

reply

Lol, and that isn't an accident.

reply

I think T-rump supporters are the target buyers for these promos. Many have said they supported him because they’re in bad financial shape.

reply

GM is going to concentrate on driverless and electric cars which threaten 4 million jobs. Meanwhile, Trump supporters continue to whine about immigrants taking their jobs while job loss is from technology. They refuse to retrain while waiting for high-paying factory jobs and a coal revitalized coal industry.

reply

If they are concentrating on electric cars why is the Volt being dumped?

reply

Probably to up production on the fully-electric Bolt. Volt is a hybrid.

reply

You should watch Who Killed the Electric Car? The US has had a love/hate relationship with electric vehicles for years.

reply

EVs are successful in places like California where there are state subsidies and investment in EV infrastructure, like recharger stations and solar panel covered parking lots.

reply

EV's are the future for sure, but getting people to buy them is another story. Another problem is recharging stations, what if thousands of people all plugged into the grid at roughly the same time? Like you said, solar panels are the future as well. The US is decades behind other Countries in this technology. Its basically free energy so I don't know why its such a lagging industry. You could have neighborhoods with solar panels all sharing power.

reply

Unfortunately solar power is still a net loss when you account for the spent fossil fuel to create the paneling in the first place. We don't need to be the leaders yet because the tech isn't ready for prime time. If we are really ever going to get serious about clean energy we have to de-stigmatize nuclear power.

I'm not talking about Three Mile Island nuclear, I mean small mini-reactors in a cell network. These mini-reactors have 0 chance to explode due not using uranium rods. But the anti-nuclear lobby has been suppressing this tech from reaching its potential. The basic idea, is that if everyone has a mini-reactor buried in their back yard, we could essentially never pay a bill again by sharing the offload to the grid as the reactors will produce more power than a household would ever need. These will also make EV and Hydrogen Fuel Cell cars more sustainable as an industry and everyday commodity.

reply

Nuclear and clean don't belong in the same sentence.

Where is all the nuclear waste going? Electricity will costs 15-70% more than from a full-size nuclear power station, due to economies of scale. It needs a coolant. What would stop a terrorist using one of these things for a dirty bomb?

Solar, hydro and wind sound safer and cleaner.

reply

Thats very interesting, thanks for the link. I have never thought of mini reactors before. But you are right, if we want cheap energy then this is the way to go. I have also always wondered why fission hasn't been invented yet. Is it impossible to do?

reply

If you want automated cars, and/or the adoption of fully electric cars....the old has to go. Do you want a cleaner environment that makes for a better CLIMATE, or for everyone to live in happiness and rainbows and never lose their livelihoods?

You can't have both, and trying to force it will lead to bloodshed.

Progressives have ZERO solutions.

reply

"...everyone to live in happiness and rainbows and never lose their livelihoods?..."

My area changed from being a safe zone to a flood zone because of climate change. There was already a major flooding. Lives lost, homes destroyed or seriously damaged, businesses closed or serious economic losses. It cost my area billions. I watched people form lines for weeks to get food, water and clothes. Years later, some former homeowners still have not had their houses replaced because insurance companies find a way not to pay.

"Progressives have ZERO solutions. "

Renewables sound like a solution. The country has no choice. Things will continue to grow worst with deaths, property damage and economic loss.

reply

It will lead to bloodshed?

Drama queen please.

Progressives have ZERO solutions?

Shut the fuck up.

You Rethugs made a big deal about Solyndra & you used it as a talking point but - per usual - you got the talking point but not the mutha fucking TRUTH. Investing in renewables is the PROFITABLE way to go. Wall Street will tell you that it's a GROWTH industry, lucrative. That's jobs, jobs, jobs. And what's the GOP solution for a cleaner environment? More coal? Denying science? Ignoring Pentagon reports, ignoring the consensus of the WORLD, ignoring the problem completely?
What's the GOP solution? Cut corporate taxes & deregulate?

Shut the FUCK up.

What was the GOP solution for health care costs, again? You lot fucking sniped from the cheap seats while the Dems came up with a solution, you whined & railed for 8 + years, you formed the TEA PARTY - astroturfed by Oil & Koch money, you said you'd repeal & replace Obamacare. FFS you didn't shut UP about it. Every time you met the press, every time you faced the nation, you complained about the Dems solution. WHERE WAS YOURS? You have control of the government. Shut the fuck UP about progressives not having solutions.

Do that. Then FOAD

reply

It will lead to bloodshed?

They're a rather violent group of deplorables, don't you think? Living in a better climate means we can't live in happiness - otherwise it will lead to bloodshed? WOW!

reply

I'm sorry I don't speak moron, could you re-write that in actual English?

Thanks.

Not a republican, BTW.

reply

"If you want automated cars, and/or the adoption of fully electric cars....the old has to go."

We currently have a functional automotive infrastructure built around gas-powered vehicles. Not only is it impossible to remove that infrastructure by force, but even if you could there is nothing to suggest it would be replaced by an electric-powered one. The only way for electric-powered vehicles to thrive is to compete and win in the free market.

"Not a republican, BTW."

I actually agree with you. Even the dumbest republicans are smart enough to know a tiny bit of how the free market works so they can call themselves libertarians. You were too stupid to make the cut. You're just an empty vessel like Trump who is this on one day and that on another depending on whatever thought crosses that bean in your head you call a brain.

Why the hell did you even name yourself b1cksurn to begin with when the only sick burn you can muster involves your crack pipe?

reply

TDS never ceases to amaze me.

reply

Really? You're amazed?

You're amazed that people listen to Trump's actual words & read his tweets & are appalled at his ignorance of history & decorum & respond like SANE AMERICANS?

I'm amazed that you're amazed.

You're amazed that SANE AMERICANS are appalled when he mocks a disabled reporter & maligns a prisoner of war & the family of a dead Muslim soldier? How about "To EVERYONE, including all haters and losers, HAPPY NEW YEAR " Does that sound REMOTELY Presidential to you?

Or do you find that fucking REFRESHING?

You're amazed that he's called out on ALL his LIES? (Over 7000 now, since his Inauguration - but not INCLUDING the inauguration size lies.) You're amazed that he was discovered to have slept with a porn star while he was married & that he slept with a playboy model & paid her off to keep quiet?

Amazing. But let me guess. When Obama wore his tan suit, you FREAKED. GT*F*OH
